Question regarding gas cylender and medium wt. Bbl

882 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Shadow
Hello everyone
I recently purchased a new gas cylender that is unitized to go on my Springfield medium weight stainless and it does not slide all the way down on the barrel. I tapped on the cylender and it would not budge (ended up tapping the darn thing off. I am wondering if there are two diff. cylenders for the barrel weights, I have never heard of this. Any help would be appreciated

I would check the diameter at the part of the barrel where the gas cylinder goes on.
Check a USGI barrel if possible.
It could be that the barrel diameter is a little larger in that area.
The gas cylinder could also be an aftermarket which could be causing the problem.

If it's the welded method of unitizing, it could be warped.
I've installed some that were very tight and, these should be fitted if at all possible.

Check the splines also, as some may be a bit narrow.

I'll check outthe areas you suggested, on a lighter side the gas cylender on the Poly/ TRW conversion was it tight fit? I was wondering cause when I bought the Springfield it had a unitized gas cylender with it un installed. I was wondering if I got them mixed up . Also did you get the last PM I sent you regarding reaming and reparking

Hello Tim
I resent you the PM
Thanks
Jerimy
Check the unitized assembly to insure the barrel band and gas cylinder rings are concentric and aligned properly. Check the spline ways on the barrel. Are they too narrow for the GI gas cylinder splines? If it's just snug, you may be able to drive it on with a wood block and hammer. Don't beat directly on the gas cylinder with a hammer!
Thanks Ted
I'll give the hammer and wood a try this evening when I get off work

Gas cylinders should be tight. Barrels are all the same diameter where the gas cylinder goes regardless of size. Or at least they should be. I've had to really get on a few to install them. If you are unsure about it then you best send it to warbird or me or someone. We know how much is enough and when to quit. Don't wanna see you bend something up. Parts are out of spec occasionaly.
Thanks Dan
I will probably send it off. I whacked it pretty good and got nervous when it didn't hardly budge. I'll wait til I get my two Poly's back from Warbird till I send it off though.
