Quality receiver ?

I'm going to build a general purpose rifle on the SAGE stock.
I have all the required parts except the receiver.

Who makes the "best for your/my money" M14/M1A receiver?

Why do you suggest brand A over B, C,D and F?

Thank you --

best receiver...

You have opened the proverbial can of worms with this question.

I'll say IMHO that I would go with the LRB. And I own an SA, a Fulton, and an Armscorp.

Mine are all great and I have never had a malfunction with any em. Actions are smooth as butter and I would'nt trade any of em.

BUT,

I just think that currently the chances of encountering fitting or finish or sighting problems with the others might be more likely.

Now, If you are sending the whole package off to Warbird, or Ted Brown to handle the possible headaches, then take your pick.

The thing is honestly that, one might encounter problems with any commercial receiver out there, just the way life is when it comes to these rifles.

Hope I was'nt too confusing with this.

Actually, ask one of the guys I mentioned what they think. Although I think that Ted Brown is not building rifles on Armscorp receivers anymore.

Check with them, I don't think you can go wrong there.

JP,
That is a beautiful piece ! Well Done to you Ron and Lou ! Is the Barrel a chrome lined USGI TRW as well ? Do you favor the ventilated hand guard for looks or how well it works ? With Respect - Moose
Hi Moose,

Yup, it's all TRW - bolt, barrel, op rod & trigger group anyways. :D

I just like the looks of the ventilated hand guards. You do get more mirage though.

Best,
JP
Are you building the rifle yourself, or having it built? If you are having it built ask the guy that will be doing the work what receiver to use. ell him what your budget is and what the intended purpose for your rifle will be. A general porpose rifle can be a plinker or range fun rifle to a sometimes I compete in local matches rifle. Also take into consideration the fact that you may upgrade later; add a scope or get serious with compitition one day.
I built one on a Armscorp reciever about ten years ago without to much difficulty. I have only moderate skills, but had a Marine armorer to answer my questions and look over the finnished project. I have a service barrel and all other parts are USGI. The only part that's N.M is the trigger group. I bedded it myself and it shoots better than I can.
Ask a dozen people and get half a dozen answers. For a G.P. rifle, I would shop around for recievers. You may get a deal on a good used one or your builder may be able to find you a good deal if you go that route.
Good luck and happy hunting.

Additional random information:

I will have it built by a local armorer. He is looking for a deal on receivers.
It will have all USGI parts including the barrel.
My definition of GP is a flexible rifle platform that can do everything very - very well.
It should perform well with irons, EOTech and magnified glass.
The stock is a SAGE EBR with instant bedding.
I will not compete in matches, I don't think the SAGE is legal...

It will look something like this one...

Thank you ALL for your input - I am learning.

Well, since the advent of the fine LRB receiver, my recommendation is probably going to be outdated here, but I would highly suggest a polytech. You probably won't be able to find a stripped receiver, but you can buy the entire rifle for the same or less than an LRB receiver, and replace the parts with what you have. The bonus of this is that you will have a spare forged op-rod, trigger group, and chrome-lined barrel. (Throw the bolt away though.)
I see by the picture, general purpose rifle does not equal rack grade. Thats a fine looking rifle you have planed. Let us know how it's going and make sure to post some pics of the finished project.
I would 2nd the LBR. I had Clayton at WTO build mine with a Wilson chrome barrel/usgi parts. I was going to put the sage on it but, I couldn't bring myself to do this to this beautiful rifle. The sage will go on my SA loaded.

Question for TaylorWSO

Who did the stock for that rifle?

I am not doubting the quality of an LRB, not at all. But, for example, I have a early-mid 90's, SA Loaded. Unitized gas system, trigger job (thanks Warbird  ), a ARMS #18 (fit perfect the first try), Aimpoint CompM2...
I understand that forged is great..has anyone ever cracked a cast receiver, shot it out, worn it out to the point to where it is no longer functional? My serial # is 14xxxx...

Better finish? Does it actually shoot that much better? :?:
