I have been trying to find the somewhat rare but becoming more rare "Rear Heel Stamped Polytech" I ran into a decent deal for what I thought was a moderately used heel stamped Polytech M14S. To my surprise the barrel is in unfired condition as well as everything else. The bolt face didn't even have a ring around the firing pin. So long story short I snagged the rifle ASAP. It has a USGI synthetic stock on it and a neutered flash hider that I am not sure are original to the rifle. It did come with a 30 or 40 round magazine (it is huge) that I will probably throw on PX. It also came with a USGI cleaning kit in the butt of the rifle. The beginning of the year seems to be the best time to shop. This is hands down the best looking Chinese M14 I have ever seen. And my 8th M14 of my collection sitting rightfully next to my other Poly and my heel stamped Norinco. M14 #9 is already in the works and will be my first personally built rifle. Looking like a good start to the year for me.

Dont mind the grease it has been cleaned up. It was somewhat excessively slathered on.

Really nice piece. I have zero knowledge on Polytech, but it's interesting. Please how about some history(altered m14 to semi?), quality, cast, USGI parts fit, accuracy, compared to Norinco(which I know little about), potential problems? All data is good, and thanks in advance.
The Quality is pretty decent. Some finishing work can be a little rough sometimes depending on serial and how much it has been used. Norincos are generally worse with the finish.

They have a forged receiver and they are very well built. Also rumor going around about soft bolt problems in the past with some Chinese M14's which I have never seen in the 10 Polytech rifles ive encountered from different people with multiple thousands of rounds through them. My side stamped poly has around 5000 rounds in it no problems and no soft bolt crap.

Parts fit is pretty good. Most receivers almost can have a usgi bolt dropped in from my experience. Handguards can be kinda wobbly sometimes and most need some shimming. Not as tight as a M1A but both Norinco and Polytechs are decent.

The Norinco and Polytech wood stocks imo are pretty crappy but I have seen some that are nice. They seem overly light. And made of something that isnt Birch or Walnut sometimes.

Accuracy wise these rifles don't really perform any worse than an M1A once shimmed. 2 moa or less generally from my experience. The barrels on these rifles are superb and are chrome lined. If anything the Chinese are good at it is building barrels.

Compared to a Norinco the Polytech will on average have a better finish. Both are decent rifles out of the box and both are very rugged and reliable just like any other M14. The only potential problem there is, is the soft bolt scare that I have never seen. And I will continue to purchase these "crappy Chinese garbage M14's" for under $1000 that sport a forged receiver and chrome lined barrel until said problem occurs.

A lot of m14 fans overlook these on Gunbroker thinking they are garbage and that is fine with me. Less competition. My Norinco and side stamped Polytech were purchased for less than $1300 for both combined. My side stamped poly is my truck gun and it is very used so I don't care if it gets dinged up. It is my workhorse, it is shimmed, and it shoots under 2moa regularly.

All in all for $800 or so and under these rifles are a steal imo.

Oh one potential problem with Norinco and Polytechs are the muzzle devices. Some are equipped with these. Its a flash hider that isnt cut all the way through.

And some are just like USGI like this one

Either way if you dont like it you can replace it with a USGI flash hider.

Also another possible negative is the color of the parkerizing finish. Generally the Norincos and Polytechs are lighter grey than the SA M1A and others.

And lastly if you are use to a SA M1A you will think the Chinese M14 front sight is a bit fatter because it is. It is the same as a USGI front sight probly around .75 I don't know for sure and the M1A's (except socom) have the .62NM front sight. Easily swapable if needed but I shoot 2moa and under with the fatter front sight without a problem. So it don't bother me.

And the crappy polytech even did pretty well at 1000 yards. 24inch round steel plate 4 hits out of 10 and all the misses were within a foot or so around the target. Pretty good if you ask me. (its the one in the middle. The one on the left is my SA M1A Standard, and the one on the right is my Mini 14 which did well at 400)

And my uncles polytech did well at 1000 yards too. Not sure how may he landed but he was happy it was more than a few for sure. He shot many more rounds than me too. His Polytech has a SA green composite stock. (its the m14 on the middle bench #18) And my cousin on the far bench to the right also landed hits at 1000. He has a SA M1A standard in walnut.

I knew it, I knew it. How long ago was it that you said you had your "last" rifle?? Weak, weak. Just no will power. Some one waves a really nice rifle under your nose and you jump at like a bass after a dry fly. Good score and another one joins the harem.

Hello, Good find. Yet, I think I got you beat with a sub 500 SN heel stamped for approx. $550. add a little more for my homing pigion, and I'm still under $600... You got to love the value of the early poly-techs ie, forged receiver, op-rod and chromed lined barrel. Keep shooting and play safe....

I have a few early heel stamped Chicom M14'S. Headspace tends to be too tight on a few of mine. I would recommend confirming headspace and bolt lug contact. Heel stamped Chicom M14's tend to take USGI bolts with little lapping and no breech shroud interference.
