I just painted one and used Acetone. Seemed to work fine.

any degreaser or acetone will work, Brake cleaner wont hurt it and degreases well

You may also want to rough the finish up just a tad bit with some 300 or 400 grit sand paper after using the acetone. Then give it a final wipe down with denatured alcohol. Just go easy on the sanding.

I used greased lightning and it worked fine. If your going to use brake parts cleaner use non chlorinated.

I used 150 grit, sanding all over except the checkering. Didn't sand it at all. Even sanded out some scratches. The 150 grit was fine enough for the Rust-olium Camo Khaki flat paint I used.

Used Textured Rustoleam spay over a clean USGI stock. Didn't bother wiping it down with anything, but it was in good shape to start with....some nicks, handling marks but no grease.

Had to be patient enough to let the paint dry..I put it on too thick and it really needed about a week to properly harden.
Of course, I mounted it only after a day...and the receiver and trigger sunk into the paint as if it was bedding!
Very tight fit.
