When was your first time seeing a M-16 during bootcamp while in the Corps

I wasn't in the marines but I was issued a working m-1 garand in 1985. We actualy had to fire them once as part of the base honor guard at some retired officers funeral. Everybody had m-1's at great lakes.

I first saw the M16 in bootcamp in December 1980 at Lackland AFB, TX. Shot "Expert" with it too, the medal is duly listed on my DD-214. :roll:

Yeah, I know this isn't what you're looking for, but I felt like sharing. Sorry! :lol:

I had a M14 in boot camp and never saw a M16 untill about may of 1967 when I was in Viet Nam. Our whole outfit caried M14s through the whole tour. We had M16s in the armory and we could have one if we wanted it but nobody trusted the M16. We were heavy artty. and we had other things to do besides clean rifles so we needed to have a rifle that could function with minimal maintnence...................Sp/4 Twiggy
