Please help me on scope styles

I am interested in gtting a scope for my M1A SOCOM. It has a rail for the forward mount sciope but i understand i can also place one over the reciever.

Can you tell me a bit about the difference between a "red dot" scope and a scout style scope?

WHat are the recommended brands? Nothing too expensive, but that does the job well.

SOCOM scope

I use a Leupold M8-2.5x28mm scout scope ( long eye relief ) Mdl.#50140 w/ Leuupold QRW 1" med. rings ( quick on & off ) Works good out to 200 yds ( I haven't shot it @ 300, but others have told me its good out there too ) Hope this helps
