I am turning my M1A into CSE Crazy Horse config. Right now I have:

SE scope mount
SE extended bolt release
SE front sight/gas lock
SE DC-Vortex

The gas parts are being melonited heat-treated to AMS 2753 and the piston is being hard-chromed by SE.
I have a USGI brown fiberglass stock which just arrived.
I will later get the Medium Heavy Barrel, 22.0" length, Chrome Moly, 1:10 twist, four lands and grooves, chambered for M118LR match ammunition.

That's pretty slick!
I have something similar being built but I'm going with the SE muzzle brake instead
Congratulations on a fine rifle and welcome to the board

They is the EBR stock with the M4 back end designed to be about 1lb lighter, open easier, and not rattle as much. On the downside, you lose tyhe cheek setting. But Springfield Armory and Vltor have a new stock which has a backend like that which is both collapsible AND sidefolding AND can go up and down for cheek height! The Springfield / Vltor seems the most promising to me. The downside? Sprindfield opted to have a heavy fiberglass forearm UNDER the aluminum front rail. This is not needed because you rest o the aluminum and the fiberglass only servers to do nothing.

melonited?

what purpose does this serve. Better..what is it?
Do you think that cryo treat of the bbl'd action is also worth it.
I like your build 8) , and am doing a similar configuration for hunting. I'm going for lighter weight by using a SAK standard contour nm bbl, sadlak titanium mnt., and rubber pad in place of hinged buttplate. Just looking for any pre treat accuracy edge, and extreme durability/finish.

I don't know. I just did it to have an authentic Crazy Horse. It is some heat-treatment. A the same time Smith hard chromes the piston and fits it to the cylinder, and that has got to help. Also unitizes it . I need all that.

wow, that's a gorgeous rifle

melonite is a carbonitride coating. it gives the steel a harder, lower friction surface.

as soon as i get a new barrel, i want to send my rifle out to be AlTiNi coated. has anyone tried this on a gun? i've seen it used in motorsports with success.

cryogenics works well on steel parts that experience extreme heat cycles. (tooling, springs, valves, rotors, etc). although tooling and valves benefit more from coating.

handbook is right. Melonite is the trademark name for nitrocarburizing like Parkerizing is the name for phosphate coating. Do a search for nitrocarburizing. It's very interesting.
