Newbie here. Name is Dave. This is my first post.

I have not even tried to read all the posts on this subj. I am of that era, USMC.

I watched the entire series and can relay that it made me more than angry all over again to see/hear that our leaders (civil and military) were sending us over there, knowing full well it was a military action we could not win!

I am reading Dereliction of Duty by HR McMaster, current National Security Advisor. Planning was a quagmire: the Joinit Chiefs were divided, but McNamara didn't listen to them anyway and told Johnson what he wanted to hear. That's not a very reliable advisor. Johnson didn't want to increase involvement until after the 1964 election. Still reading. A friend recommended this series.

I watched & enjoyed the series, mainly for the historical footage & notes, but, I too did notice Ken Burns took his Liberal liberties in the narration. Leftists can't seem to help themselves, and must project their politics onto everybody & everything they dislike.

New member here, so I hope I don't stray outside the ROE. I think that some of the members being upset with a leftist point of view in the series is forgetting that the left played a huge role in the prosecution of the war , especially after Tet.. It's a point of view that can't be ignored when telling the whole story...just my opinion,I could be wrong...it's happened before.
If any members are interested in some awesome novels checkout Karl Marlantes "Matterhorn", John Delvecchio "The 13th Valley" and James Webb "Fields of Fire". Marlantes was featured prominently in the series, and I lost count of how many times I've read Fields of Fire. James Webb is the man.
Hope everything is cool, didn't come here to start fights.

RE: post #12 by MrM1A

It is astounding how we manage to jump into these quagmires without calculating the long-term costs versus the benefits.

Johnson did' t want to commit to combat until after the 1964 election.

The JCS, who abdicated their duty to advise the President, estimated that it would take 500K troops and five years to stop the insurgency. McNamara wouldn't listen. He thought that combat was a mode of communication. He should have stayed at Ford.

Quagmire.

Didnt know where to post this, but it's an interesting watch to say the least! Didn't know that Ho Chi Minh actually wrote to Wilson after WW2, and Truman, and that we saved that guys life?!

I watched it to see the M14 and BAR in real action, plus I'm a historical and political junkie. So if you are, too, it's a very interesting documentary, interviewing both sides of the war from the beginning.

Unfortunately, several modern day war arenas seem to mirror the same..... over in other parts of the world and here at home, just in a different version with Trump, kinda (speaking only of political differences). If you think we havent been split before, watch this docu-series, and learn some history. It's really interesting. Also shows Socialism/communism/capitalism, and what happens when in the same area.....

Is this the Ken Burns documentary?

We had a thread on this last fall and I got 3 months in Ban Camp for my comments about Obama. It should have been moved from the Hollywood section to the Politics section.

Yep!! The Burns documentary, could totally see how it would flame up some sides. I think it's pretty well done, representing both sides, as best it could. Which.... I'm gonna say is total opposites of each other. Sad it came to what it did.

Didn't know it was on for 3 months!! Sorry for the late reply.....

All the stuff about Ho Chi Minh being a Nationalist is a bunch of crap. He was Soviet Communist trained, and like all the Commie style guys such as Stalin, they don't even use their own name and are Nationalist only to extent that they want THEIR idea of communism to prevail. If you don't agree with that, you are counter revolutionary and need to be put down. The use of purges to quell opposition is not a Nationalist ideal, it is a Commie imperative. HCM wanted to be, and was trying hard, to be just like Stalin.

Unfortunate you did not live through it and have first hand knowledge of that time. Don't allow yourself to be misled by what Ken Burns chose to include in this program.
