Well, the true front of the op rod needs to meet the tail of the gas piston, so there's no gap there. If you're talking about where the stock and the handguard are semi-radiused to make a space for the op rod when it's fully forward, 1/16" is enough to assure the op rod won't be whacking something when the bolt goes into battery.
