I just received the GI M14 spring from Numrich gun parts, I want to put it on my new M1A, they look strongest compering with the original one on the rifle.
My opinion it is that the GI spring are better to give less stress to the rifle ? Tks Ric

Ric,

The OP Rod spring tends to compress a bit over time and with
firing. I "save" a new one to compare length and compression
over time and replace them when they are about 1-1/2" shorter
than the new ones. Stress really isn't the issue, functionality is.

Good luck!

op rod spring

Ric,

The specification length for a new spring is 15.23 inches. I have many spares and they vary in length up to about 15.6 inches. I would not use one shorter than the specified length.

BTW, I never thanked you for the information you supplied me on bringing my guns to Italy if I should decide to move to our home there when I retire.

Thanks very much!

Mike
Hi , thanks all of you for the info,

Mike, my plesure.

Op Rod Spring problems

When your op rod spring looses strength, here is what will happen. The op rod spring guide will fail to stay engaged in the front magazine slot. This allows the magazine to become unlatched at the front under recoil. The mag will slip down and the round will feed against the breach face and fail to chamber. It usually happens in a rapid fire match where your forearm is against the front of the mag pushing back against it. I recommend that the spring be changed anytime it has an overall length of 14.5" or less.
I got a dozen USGI op-rod springs from Bill Ricca at a PA gun show a few years ago. 6 M-14 , 6 M1 Garand. He's got good stuff at a fair price.
