Currently have my new M1A torn down for initial cleaning and am about to put back together. My question is this, should grease be used to lubricate the Op Rod shaft as it will be sliding inside of the Op Rod guide or should oil be used?

Grease please. And grease the op rod spring, the op rod guide, and inside the op rod spring tube.
Now if we could only use Bacon grease, that would make the sweetest smelling rifle around.

While your at it don't forget the cam around the bolt roller, and anywhere the op rod slides along the barrel and the receiver.

I only use grease on my rifle. I lubricate everywhere there is friction between two parts. except the gas cylinder and piston, and the bottom of the bolt where it contacts the cartridges in the magazine. You may also want to get a bolt roller greaser. Makes greasing it a whole lot easier.

Tactical grease? What part of grease is tactical? Seriously, is that a joke or a marketing goldmine? I love the term, I live in CA, and I would love to have some 'tactical grease'

Just got back from the range today. A gentleman was shooting his standard for the first time. Just had what little schmutz that came with the rifle. Did a basic lube job for him and showed him how to take it down. His comment was how much smoother the action was. Oh, If he had only found this forum. I commend the O.P., you did your research and ask questions.

As long as the grease cannot support a bayonet.
Or one of those "shoulder things that pop up..." or whatever it was that nut McCarthy said that time...

Bacon grease on your firearms could be of another advantage, if you're worried about jihadists. The threat of getting shot in and of itself isn't much of a deterrent for some of them, but make our guns "unclean" and we might be on to something. DIEVIL

How much grease should I use in those areas? Just wipe a little on the rod and spring? I've been brushing on some CLP in those areas but I'm willing to try something different.
A visible thin coat is what I do. I use the long Q-tip type cleaning swabs to get grease into the op rod spring tube(And also for cleaning out) and an acid brush for the rest. You don't have to gob it on. The main thing is to reduce the friction from metal to metal contact.
