Currently have my new M1A torn down for initial cleaning and am about to put back together. My question is this, should grease be used to lubricate the Op Rod shaft as it will be sliding inside of the Op Rod guide or should oil be used?
Wow ... hadn't thought about the op rod spring, guide, or spring tube. Thanks for the info and will be sure to do this. GI1Grease please. And grease the op rod spring, the op rod guide, and inside the op rod spring tube.
Now if we could only use Bacon grease, that would make the sweetest smelling rifle around.

But...but...but the other way you get to love it inGI2You may also want to get a bolt roller greaser. Makes greasing it a whole lot easier.

As long as the grease cannot support a bayonet. Is tactical grease legal in CA, MA, NY etc?

Walt Kuleck/Clint McKee's book " The M14 Complete Assembly Guide" is a good reference on what to do and the pitfalls to watch out for.yeah I didnt know to lube inside op rod / spring either. I've always oiled spring and inside there
Or one of those "shoulder things that pop up..." or whatever it was that nut McCarthy said that time...As long as the grease cannot support a bayonet.
A visible thin coat is what I do. I use the long Q-tip type cleaning swabs to get grease into the op rod spring tube(And also for cleaning out) and an acid brush for the rest. You don't have to gob it on. The main thing is to reduce the friction from metal to metal contact. How much grease should I use in those areas? Just wipe a little on the rod and spring? I've been brushing on some CLP in those areas but I'm willing to try something different.
