I am a member of the NRA. M membership is up for renewal. My questions are:

1. The NRA has been around since 1871 and there are 20-25000 gunlaws on the books. Is that being effective?

2. Is the NRA going to sit by and allow the California .50 cal. gun bill go into effect? Is that being effective?

The anti-gun lobby  will slowly and effectively get bans on an individual weapon. Will the NRA do something when the deer rifle and shotgun are the only thing left?

4 million members @ $35.00 =$140 million dollars. 8O I do not understand. :?: The fat cats at the NRA must be living large. If the GOA & JPFO had 4 million members things would be much different I believe.

Any comments.

Ellisco, you have some valid questions.I am a NRA member since 1993 and I believe it is the only real game in town.I think they are a true force as far as the progun lobby is concerned. As far as all the gun laws on the books think what it would be like if NRA wasnt there.
I am sure that all the NRA high ups make a nice salary but I am sure they devote all their time and energy into their job.
I however do have one complaint.I had been solicited repeatedly by the NRA via phone calls. It got to the point that I had to get nasty and tell them to take me off the list or I would terminate my membership.Dont get me wrong I donated money other then my membership fees in the past. Its not that I dont want to do my part.I have a baby at home and when I get telemarketers calling me at all hours of the night I get a little hostile.
I will keep my membership active and I do support the NRA and I recomend all gun owners do.
JMHO....Ray

I'm a N.R.A. life member. If not for the NRA a lot of other states would be like Kalifornia. The anti's have there groups which are very effective, we need to counter this. The NRA speaks for all of us gun owners as one loud voice with some power behind it. Without them the anti's would overwhelm us with feel good laws that help no one and hurt gun owners.

To really have your question answered maybe we could address it to Tom Dashale I wager all the money I got (which isn't much) that he thinks the NRA is pretty effective. I am a NRA life member have been for years and try to send them a little something extra now and then, money could not be better spent in my opinion, just knowing that one penny of my money may have helped take Dashale out gave me the most satisfaction and the biggest smile I have had since my children were born. When you consider what they (NRA) are up against I think they do a bang up job. Take a look around you how many tree huggers and antis do you see. This is no longer a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. All we need is dissension in the ranks. The best we can hope for is to slow down our losses if you don't believe that go even to your local government and try to get something done. They know better than you do and they know whats good for you and there is no way to fight them.

I've been a lifer since 1963, I give them what I can, I've seen first hand what they can do, and I've seen first hand what they are up against.

Last but not least I do hope that this discussion WILL stay reasonable and sensible.

Remember too the the NRA is much more than a political action comittee. True, the politics is close to everyone's heart seems to get the most talk, but the original charter was to promote and encourage the shooting sports.

Bear witness to the many good and useful programs offered by the NRA such as training for LEO's, weapons safety classes, defensive shooting shooting for men and women - not to mention the many competition and olympic programs.

Look also at facilities dedicated to the shooting and hunting sports like the Wittington center, and the insurance programs that provide benefits to many that may not have access otherwise.

Yes, there is a lot more to the NRA than lobbying senators. Baeing a huge organization I'm sure there are places where they could be a little more efficient (like holding off on the junk mail a bit) but overall they are a worthy place to send the TINY annual membership. Shoot, the magazine ALONE is worth more than the membership in the association.

The NRA is a good deal for everyone. I've been a life member since the 1980's though, so you may hear a little bias there... ;)

:D I too am a Life Member, I have been since 1967 when my Stepfather enrolled me!There are many things that the NRA does and doesn't do that annoy me or that I dont understand, but I do know that they are the ONLY Political Organisation that will Fight for Gunowners Rights,I bet you that if the NRA did not exist we would not be on this Board right now discussing Guns that we own because we woulden't own any Legaly. Sit back and think of All the Things the NRA does not only for its Members but for Gunowners in General that are not Members,Sustinemus touched on it in his Post above, as far as individual States passing Anti gun Laws that is not the NRAs Fault but the Fault of the People in the State by electing Liberal Anti Gun Legislators! as far as the Brady Bill and the 94 Import Ban the NRA fought that Tooth and Nail but lost, you cant win them all. As Federal stated Look at what they are up against, look at all the anti Gun indoctornation that has been going on in our Schools, learning Centers and our National Media for Decades now! Just be Thankful to the Responsible Gunowners and the NRA! ](*,)

I am a new NRA member (looking to put in a life membership when i have the $$$) I live in commiefornia, aka California, the NRA tries the best it can, but even with well finances....it still can't influence the minds of anti gun politicians, no money in the world is gonna stop anti gun nuts like Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, Ed Kennedy, John Kerry, John Conyers, or any of those people from voting to ban all guns (or limit them soooo much that it practically is not shooting anymore). The only way to get the anti gunners out of power is to vote them out, and that is a extremely hard task to do, in states such as mine.

NRA?

I have to agree with Treadhead. I am a life member, but they fell out of favor with me when they cut the price on the higher classes of membership once. I felt it wasn't fair to the members that paid full cost to upgrade. The American Rifleman magazine isn't what it used to be, either. There is way too much nongun content.....
