For M1A mount problems use Burris Signature Zee rings and adjustible inserts. They compensate for the 3rd generation and other mounts being off. 3 sizes of inserts: .05 + and -, .10+ and minus and if really off .20+ and minus. Moves your scope right or left and up or down by their SHAPE (+fat and -thin). THEN use the internal adjustments of your scope. Can't miss!!!!!!!!!

Millett rings are also adjustable for windage.
The setscrews are on both sides of the bottom of the rings, and make 'dialing in' a little tedious, but, capable of being done without maxing out a scope.

"Yah, Vee Ahf Zah Soh-Loo-Shun!"

Just to add & confirm what others are saying here: the combined use of Leupold/Burris Weaver-type bases and the Burris Signature
"Z" rings allows the installer the complete freedom to adjust the alignment without using any of the scope's internals at all except for the final accuracy tuning. (The Burris "Z"s are the Weaver compatible ones, IIR.)

In the past three months, I've fitted three sets of Leupold Std mounts (no, not Weaver style, but the setup "stich" is the same...) onto older Mauser bolt actions, along with those Burris Signature "gimbal-type" plastic insert rings. As well, Burris offers additional adjustments via some optional very offset inserts, up to, I believe, 20 MoA maybe? With that amount of possible corrective function, if you can't get your scope aligned, you've got some other major problem.

Bassett bases, "high" if you want to be able to use the iron sights as well, and Burris rings. Got it made, man!

7.62 spark: Go to Burris website and watch the video and order the Burris Zee signature rings #420521 and pos-align offset inserts #626019. Use a Boresighter to align the scope with the barrel at home (the plastic inserts allow for the bad fit of the receiver and mount) without touching the scope settings. If it is way off Burris has some plastic shims. I have used this setup on 3 rifles now including my M1A standard and it will zero perfect! 1 inch or less.
The secret is the plastic insert rings that are offset, ie. 1 part thicker and 1part thinner, and moves your SCOPE to align with the BARREL BEFORE you ever adjust the scope INTERNALLY. Talk to Burris and study it. I use a cheap strong steel 3rd gen NCStar mount that cost $24 but you must clean the threads with solvent or alcohol and blue locktite the mount. Your problem will be solved. John Gault

The 4th Gen Steel Mount is made to about the same specs as a SADLAK or Smith Enterprise mount

The word "about" is the key here. You can usually get by with an inexpensive scope(for awhile anyway) but when people start saying unkind things about mounts and rings there's a reason. Spend more money once and be done with it.
And to top it all off, Sadlak Ind are people you can actually talk to(as in TELEPHONE) if necessary.

Most of us have made similar mistakes along the way and there's only one way out!
