While we are on the subject, has anyone ever approached Pelican about a possible group buy? On that note, has anyone ever done a group buy on any case? Just wondering.

SKBs are good!

I've sold SKBs for a number of years. They are about 2/3 the price of a Pelican, and have held up very well on my own trips out into The Brooks Range and other tough Alaskan locations. one of them fell of the conveyor belt at Kotzebue, dropping about 4 - 5 feet onto the tarmac. I groaned, but found the two rifles inside intact. The alaska Airlines agent who witnessed this with me and groaned alone with me, in harmony, said they'd cover the damages. There were none, not even to the case itself.

The newest two-rifle SKB models have roller wheels which makes them so much easier than my oldest Pelican, which holds two rifles, but can only be carried (or dragged, which has happened, I'm sad to say) in one's ever-more aged hands.

I was wondering about everyone's various case set-ups for their platforms.

I'm rather fond of the pelican's--another addition for another time. Waterproof, crushproof, dustproof, etc, score huge for the collection as well as many, many other uses. My wife thought I was nut for spending the $$ on more cases but when the place flooded, her parents WWII memorabilia and presentation flags were pristine.

In terms of contents, I would expect the follow:

platform
magazines
alternate optics
bipod
tools
dessicant
???

I know my current set up(s) are literally grab-and-go ready. Anyone else?

I'm working on being fully grab and go...

I have a Pelican with a drag bag in it with my scope (new one coming), bipod and sling all attached to my rifle, magazines in pouches, tools/cleaning stuff in a pouch attached to the drag bag and a renewable desiccant. I'll possibly be adding a spotting scope and tripod (tripod will work with the rifle also). Have to see if there will be room for the spotting scope and tripod, may have to shuffle things a little to get them in. The Pelican with everything is heavy, the drag bag isn't bad and has back pack straps. Pretty self contained setup.

Here

does anyone make a hard case with custom foam for the m14
There was a guy here awhile back that had one of the nicest cases I've seen. I'm not sure if it was a pelican or not but he did cut the foam to hold his rifle, couple mags, sling, and I think scope/bipod. He bought the foam and use a foam cutter off of amazon. I'll try to find it and post the link, anyone else remember it?

Found it- http://m14forum.com/pictures/69532-custom-hard-case.html
and another- http://m14forum.com/bolt-action/83310-m24a2-gun-case-foam-template.html

You can buy custom cut foam from Optics Planet:

http://www.opticsplanet.net/storm-case-custom-foam.html

M14 is about $88

I've ordered from them before, just not foam. They're ok, but I'd keep an eye out for an online coupon code.

I recently got a Nanuk on Dvor for $150. The quality is incredible & exceeded my expectations for the $. The latches are great & lock. Has wheels. Has the pull-n-pluck interior foam. Plenty of room for my scoped M1A plus any other accessories like bipod, mags, cleaning kit, & even spotting scope if u space everything out right. Def worth checking out.

Bought an Apache from Harbor Freight a few years back. I got the rolling rifle but they have everything down to pistol size. Very well made for the price. About the only thing I’d buy from HF unless I was looking for a one time use disposable tool.

And yes, I know this is a 10 year old thread.

My favorite case for years has been a ICC (Impact Case Company) welded aluminum case. I started using it back when I was transporting a real GI M14 to matches and that included air travel. I like the full length piano hinge and locking bar that secures all four hasps with one pad lock.

In answer to the OP's question; CONTICO makes a hard case for rifles that is much less expensive and of course, not the quality of the Pelican cases but still serviceable for the money. IIRC, I used to get them from Academy or Walmart. I don't remember exactly as it's been over ten years. The ones from Harbor Freight look promising.
