First range trip today, some questions...
Got back from the first range session with the new rifle not long ago, and had a few questions and observations.
This is the first time I've ever fired an M1A, and second time firing a semiauto .308. After shooting so much 5.56, this rig is a blast! Much bigger boom, not much more recoil, surprisingly controllable in rapid fire, flash suppressors WORK(all shooting was done tonight by headlights), and lots of fun!
Now to the questions. First, I think I figured out why the rifle was traded in. Through the course of about 100 rounds, I had numerous FTE's. It occurred to me that the chamber had never been cleaned, and was probably sticky with grease or cosmoline, as the FTE's became less frequent with more shooting. I'll give it a good cleaning tonight, as it was too cold to do it at the range. I'd intended to do it before I shot it, but a coworker just had to see what it would do. I'll know better next time. Does this sound like something that would happen to a new rifle with a dirty chamber?
Second, I was shooting some cheap milsurp of unknown origin. It came in lead or solder sealed metal containers of of 1,000 rounds, in twenty round boxes marked 7.62 mm L2 A2, and ink stamped with a vertical arrow, 51, and POF in a circle. Date of manufacture is 18 Feb 1980. The headstamp is L2A2 POF 80. Any idea about where this stuff came from or its quality?
Sorry to be so long winded, but I think I'm going to enjoy this one, and want to get off on the right foot. Thanks for the replies!
