I'm not expecting many responses here, just getting it off my chest. Up until now, i've had the great fortune of being able to walk out onto my back porch and legally shoot without disturbing neighbors or worrying about hitting things beyond my target. Even being in the military; I was lucky enough to rent a home by my last base on 100 acres with a 15 foot sand backstop 135 yds from my porch. Now however, I'm stuck driving 35 min to a 100yd range to shoot and am separated from 3/4 of my firearms back at my parents house 800 miles away. Anybody feel my pain here? I'm sure those who live overseas or in the city suffer this way too.

Not an uncommon occurrence at all. I easily drive that far to shoot so I feel your pain!

The nearest public range where I live is only a 50 yard range maximum, it is almost always crowded so there is a wait. On the plus side, the folks who work there are some of the nicest you'd ever want to meet.

There is a state range further away, but for several years it was closed for maintenance, so you can imagine how crowded the 50 yard range was at times.

No matter what, keep shooting, it can always get worse!

Yeah I've been a member of the same rod & gun club for a couple decades now so I'm used to it, they have an outdoor pistol & 100yd rifle range in a nice location, unfortunately they have limited space as most with weekends being the busiest, so I either have to get there about an hour early and shoot the bull with the old timers & range cadre I know well to ensure I get a bench which has become part of the ritual, or, go on an off day during the week.

Another thing your going to have to get used to is your not on your private back porch anymore, you'll have to follow the rules & directions of the range officers that can seem a bit strict at times, but it's for everyone's safety, I've seen some real nimrods show up and have stared down a barrel a few times...

There is only one public range in my area and it is simply not safe to go there, no supervision and people walk down to the 100yd. target frames while others are shooting and there is frequently those with full automatics blasting away at jugs, bottles, etc. Went there one time and stayed in the truck to watch and drove away. It is owned by the County and can't believe no one has been shot. I am fortunate that there are 3 private ranges close by, one being FOP and other two simply private clubs and have belonged to all of them over time. Conducted construction equipment operation classes for some years and needed somewhere to operate the equipment and worked on all three of them in rebuilding roads, embankments, draining swamps, surveying property lines, etc., etc., and as a result free to shoot on them whenever. We took the one range out to 400yds, but other ones just 100 and 200yds. One I frequent most, two to three times a week, is the 200yd one which is closest, about 5 miles or so, and there are rarely more than two to three others that show up. Interesting that the 200yd. target I generally use is seldom shot and as a result the target frame is as good as the day I put it up. 25, 50, and 100 take a beating and between now and 1/10/17 going to try and put up new frames for the club(knee surgery on the 10th and will be down for a while.) We do have some clowns that purposely shoot the wooden target frames and blast away with shotguns which are not permitted, but seems like you always have people that have no regard for what others have contributed to the range. If those clowns had to put up with what others have described for shooting ranges they might appreciate what they have a bit more.

That's absolutely insane from a liability standpoint, let alone insane for one's personal safety. At my range we have regular audits from the NRA to improve the safety of the range, all range officers maintain NRA certs. Our shooting club has been in the same location since the 1950's, then people moved-in around it as if they didn't know and started complaining trying to get us shutdown, some even faking incidents of bullet over travel and lawyering up, so the club has to maintain insurance and a safe environment for ALL concerned lest we loose it, although every once in awhile we get "Tourists", if they can't listen to the rules and act like a knucklehead they get ejected.

It's threads like these that remind me of how thankful I should be. There's several nice outdoor (and indoor) ranges near me. The closest (and one of my favorites) is 8 miles away.

-300 yard public range (covered benches) with frame holders at 25, 50, 75, 100 & 200 yards; steel at 300
- 4 dedicated pistol bays
- covered, 40-point smallbore range out to 100 yards
- covered, 15-point highpower range out to 500 yards (with pits at 200 & 500)
- 12 station sporting clay range
- indoor air rifle range

$10/day gets you access to the public range. Members ($100 individual or $110 family) can shoot in 3 matches and get your card punched for that range. Once punched, you can use that particular range (HP, pistol, etc) whenever you like...as long as there's not a match being held at that time. Great way to get access to a 500 yard range and not have to put up with 99% of the idiots at the public range and their unsafe behavior.

Be careful which 'public' range you frequent. I include those in which the only qualification to join is a check that doesn't bounce. Safety and maintenance run the entire spectrum here in the Ft Worth/Dallas area.

My wife and I opted to join a private club. It's quite a ride from home, but safety rules are job 1 (and enforced), it is well maintained, and we always feel safe there. Well worth the search.

I belong to a range that's open to the public. It has both pros and cons.

Pro: The people that run the place are great. Its very safety oriented. An indoor and two outdoor pistol ranges. Both skeet and trap ranges. And an outdoor rifle range. Plus, its only about 25 minutes away.

Cons: The indoor range backstop can't take heavy caliber pistol shooting. The rifle range is only about 110 yards, and that's against the berm/backstop. The only real hassle with the place is that the trap range is right next to the rifle range. If you want to go deeper than 50 yards on the rifle range during a cease-fire, you have to coordinate with the guys shooting trap. OTOH, members and their guests can shoot before hours, so there's a work around.

My son-in-law's father lives on acreage about 35 minutes away. He thinks we can set up to about 400 yards on his place shooting down a wide draw with a good hillside backstop. All it will take is some work with a chainsaw for some small brush, and investing a little sweat. Son-in-law and I have even discussed building permanent target stands, and a shelter to shoot from under. With gun tables. If it happens, may as well do it right. BGRIN1

I've been swept a lot at public ranges. Keep you head on a swivel, eyes and ears opened. Any questionable activity by others must get reported to the RSO(s). It amazes me that more folks are not injured/killed at public ranges with the stuff we see there. And let me say that LEO/private ranges are not much better.

Where I live I have access to a public range and a police range that is open to the public within 20 minutes of my house. The problem is that I own a lot of steel targets and love to shoot steel. The nearest place to shoot steel is over an hour away. I certainly wish that the Salt lake area had a closer place for that.

A couple of good public ranges here in NE Arkansas ( both on USFS land) about a hour+ drive time. I joined a private range, V.E.T.S Shooting Center, only 20 minutes from my house $100 a year for dues and distances up to 800 yards, Life is good!
