I just got a hold of a good used cronograph but I am not experienced on how to
use them.

I know the operation of the crono but how far do you set it up from the muzzle and do you need to do anything to the rifle between shots like swabbing the barrel?

I just set mine three good paces in front of the muzzle... around 10' or so.

I just shoot for group as usual and ran a bore snake every 10 rounds thru my barrel

Lots of ways to use a chrono. Whatever you decide on, do it every time! I sit mine so the center of the screens are ten feet in from of the muzzle, set it so the bullets goes through the center of the screens........... shoot at least 5 rounds for analysis. Do the set up the same every time so you can make comparisons...... keeps track of the weather (temperature, sunny, cloudy, etc. etc.) and add it to the velocity data - standard deviation and extreme spread data is important.....

For most chronos 15 feet is recommended to avoid any influence from muzzle blast. You wont likely run enough rounds over it for the bore condition to have any influence either. Just try not to shoot the thing, it happens. Remember this quote from Dr Oehler, the father of the chronograph. "We get a lot questions about bullets going to slow, but not too many on bullets going too fast". A chronograph can be a real eye opener.

I've shot mine twice.

Yep. Nailed a V-wire with bullets twice. After straightening them out, the thing reads the same numbers as before I shot it. (Just don't shoot the box.) I've been lucky if not absent minded.

HINT: Remember how high that scope sits over the barrel. Offset accordingly. GI2

Which was exactly why I marked the V-wires with red electrical tape as an indicator to where I needed to center the scope reticle so I didn't hit the box...

Which is exactly just one of the many reasons why I now use a bayonet attched MagnetoSpeed chronograph.

I have the original version of the MagnetoSpeed and it works really well. It turns out that the sidewalk firing position where I shoot is somewhat above grade and grade is sloping away so it takes more than a single "cease fire" interval to get a chrono set up (I don't want to be 'that guy', holding up the shooting). No such problem with the MagnetoSpeed.

I like the tape idea. I still use a conventional chrono for pistol. And, yes, I did have to buy some replacement screen supports. I now have a small inventory!

Several years ago a buddy bought a new chronograph. He was notorius for not reading instructions. So we took it out to the range, set it up and started shooting. Could not get a reading at all. While my buddy exercised his four letter word vocabulary, I read the instructions. Turns out we had the unit turned 180 degrees and were shooting through it backwards. Spun it around and it worked fine. ICONROLLEY

You should be able to download a copy of the user manual. And as stated previously, don't shoot it!

I got my 'non working' PACT model 1 XP back today; PACT returned me a new one so their warranty is as described...

Not sure when I will give it a try though as I bought me a 'Pro Crono' one after I shipped it back and it has been working fine.
