26th LGS,

A GREAT day on the range this morning, finally, clear beautiful Blue skies, Temp 38-42, wind at 6-8 right out of the Northwest, I brought out my M1A NM, using M118 (LC-85E135-016) Lake City surplus ammo from 1985 production run, I never shot Military surplus before it's time. A good twenty year old was what the doctor had ordered this fine day. 100 yard range target off the bench with using only my bad eye. Well the first string was a 194-9X, 2nd group at a little better with a 199-12X on paper target. Then I moved onto the 560 yard targets, using the same surplus ammo from 1985 again, hitting the metal dongs at 89% of the time. I sure wish that I have had a few cases of this LC from '85. This ammo was a gift from 26th LGS from two years ago. Thanks brother......

Outstanding shooting - XXIV Corps :D

Great range report, sir. Thanks for sharing the info. :arm37:

When the weather here is good, it's great!

Good shooting - and a great day to be outside - kinda enchanting....
Aloha XXIV:

Sounds like you had a GREAT day! 199-12x with the bad eye! AWESOME!

Getting old match ammo is almost next to impossible, huh? Even CMP sold out of the M118LR ammo they had. Geez!

Thanks for the report!

Aloha,

Tom O.
:D Good Shooting! \:D/
26th LGS,

One more GREAT day on the range this morning, finally, clear beautiful Blue skies, Temp 32-34°F, wind at 11-13 right out of the North, I brought out my M1A NM, using Santa Barbra surplus ammo from 1980 production run, I never shot Military surplus before it's time. A good twenty five year old was what the doctor had ordered for this fine day on the range. 100 yard range target off the bench with using only my bad eye. Well the first string was a 186-5X, 2nd group at a little better with a 197-14X on paper target. The wind-chill and cold got the better of me and I stop right there, without working on the 560 yard targets......

26th LGS,

A GREAT day on the range this morning, finally, clear beautiful Blue skies, Temp 34-36°F, wind at 12-14 right out of the North into my eyes, I brought out my NM M1A, using Radway Green surplus ammo from 1988 production run (Lot # A4/1818 23.5.88), I never shot Military surplus before it's time. But this was a little green at only 17 years old. 100 yard range target off the bench with using only my bad eye, rapid fire. Well the first string was a 192-5X, 2nd group at a little better with a 196-9X on paper target. The wind-chill had the feeling of only 21°F and the cold got the better of me and I stop right there, without engaging the 560 yard targets......

Bottom line, the Radway Green surplus ammo didn't do as well as the Santa Barbra surplus I used last week...

I needed something to warm these old bones up so I stopped at the Smokehouse on the way home and picked up a 1/2lbs smoked green chilies cheese Burger covered with onions and steak fries. I feel much better now :D , don't tell the wife 26th LGS.

Wow, what I would give to have a 500 yard range with swingin' steel.......

Make sure senior citizen deer rifle shooters don't ruin your club.

Good shootin' bro!

Can someone explain what the scores mean? I'm not familiar with this scoring system.

--Fargo007
fargo007,

Scoring, 20 rounds on one target max. The center X and the 10 ring scores a 10, 9 ring ect...... total score out of 20 shots plus the number of hits through the center bulls eye.

9 ring=4 hits (9x4) =36 points
10 ring=7 hits (10x7) =70 points
X ring=9 hits (10x9) =90 points
------------------------------------
Total score 196-9X

26th LGS,

A GREAT day on the range this morning, finally, clear beautiful Blue skies with a few white clouds around, Temp 45-47°F, wind at 2-3 MPH right out of the North, I brought out my M1A NM, using Portuguese m/963 surplus ammo from 1978 production run headstamp (Lot FNM 78-23), I never shot Military surplus before it's time. A good twenty seven year old was what the doctor had ordered this fine day on the range. 100 yard range target off the bench with using only my bad eye. Well the first string was a 181-0X, 2nd group was a little better with a 190-4X on paper target. Then I moved onto the 560 yard targets, 18 for 20 hits, I had only one group 3 rounds in less than a 2" dia. circle.

To recap the last four visits to the range this year;

* M118 Lake City surplus ammo from 1985 (LC-85E135-016). The first string was a 194-9X, 2nd group a 199-12X at 100Yd.

* Santa Barbra surplus ammo from 1980. The first string was a 186-5X, 2nd group at a little better with a 197-14X at 100Yd.

* Radway Green surplus ammo from 1988 (Lot # A4/1818 23.5.888). The first string was a 192-5X, 2nd group a 196-9X at 100Yd.

* Portuguese m/963 surplus ammo from 1978 (lot FNM78-23). :? The first string was a 181-0X, 2nd group a 190-4X at 100Yd.

* Hirtenberger surplus ammo from 1978 HS HP. The first string was a 188-5X, 2nd group a 190-3X at 100Yd.

Great reports! --- but I'm here stuck at work in ABQ :cry:

It sounds like you shoot at Zia. Next time you decide to go to the range, let me know & I'll bring my toys :D
coulter6,

The city of Albuquerque, has a nice covered range out on the West side of town out past the Double Eagle II Airport, 10 yards out to 560 yard targets...... My home on Wednesday mornings (9:00am), hope to see you there. I used to go to the http://www.ziarifleandpistolclub.comfor two years, then I went to the Rio Puerco valley, then I joined the new http://www.delnortegunclub.com. But I have found that the range on the West side is pretty good.

I did stop at the Smoke House on the way home...... ;)

Hey, fellow New Mexicans! What I wouldn't give for a good green chile cheeseburger right about now! :D I left ABQ in '94, and don't get back there often enough. Sure miss heading out to the Rio Puerco and defending the city from attacking beer cans. It's a lot harder to find a good place to shoot up here in Seattle.
I have heard from friends that the range on the West Side is a good 'un, but I think it got built after I left....at any rate, I haven't been there yet.
NM-ex,

You need to come back and enjoy the range and some good Green Chilies soon.

Don't tease me, sir! I miss a lot of things about NM, but Green Chile is at the top of my list! I will drop you a line next time I head down, maybe we can grab some range time and some enchilladas at Garcias!
NM-ex,

Sounds good, you do that, I'm up for some range time and Green Chillies always.
