New McMillan M1A Stocks?

3893 Views 24 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  anthonypd
I saw on here that some have complained a bit about the newer McMillan "M1A" Stocks, and I think specifically about the bolt lock relief cut. Does anyone have an image of this issue or any other issues?

I thought the only complaint about newer McMillan's, is that there aren't any newer McMillan's:rolleyes:

They still catalog the M1A stock, that is all that I know. I just bought two from U.S. Collector's Ordnance. I know for sure that at least one of them was older production. It has a Springfield Inc. sticker on it with a date. I assume that the second one is older production as well, but I don't know. It is Woodland Camo, which is not exactly what I was thinking that they were going to sell me, but it is ok, especially since I got the last camo scheme one they had. In fact, I only got it because a guy in Ohio (like me) returned it because he did not know that they were so heavy. Long story short, since it is Woodland, not Forest that Springfield Inc. had used, I can't guarantee that it is older stock. Right now they only have black left, and I think that it is the McMillan painted unit with pebblegrain finish like on my factory Springfield Inc. Super Match.

After having Woodland here, it is growing on me. I have what I think is a "Sand Camo" unit, which I kind of think is ugly.

The "new" McMillan M14 stocks do have some issues related to the molds they are now using. One issue is the thumb depression on the side of the stock and the other relates to the way they are shaping the butt area that retains the butt plate. I have talked with McMillan about these issues, but they are not going to change anything. They say there isn't enough volume in M1A/M14 stocks sales and that is why some of the other M14 stocks have been discontinued. The stocks from US Collectors Ordnance are left overs from Springfield's Super Match production which has also been discontinued. They are the older production stocks and much better than the new stocks.

You must have snagged the last camo ones they had for sale. Looks to be out of stock now; only black.

Yes. Well, the first one I ordered a while back when there were more in stock. This last one, I got was after they were out of stock on Camo. I only got it because I enquired if more would be coming in stock. They offered me one that was purchased, but was being returned because it was "too heavy", so it was purely good luck.

That makes six now that I have. Two are on rifles.

I have:
A) Forest (2)
B) Black, painted (1)
C) Woodland (1)
D) Sand (1)
E) Desert? (1). It was what Fulton Armory used to offer years ago with Black

Ted,
Thanks for your input. With the discontinuation of the Super Match and the Springfield label on my Forest example, I figured that these were old leftovers. What I can't explain is the Woodland Camo stock. I know that Springfield used Forest, but I am not sure if they ever used Woodland.

It is kind of sad that Springfield Inc. could nit duplicate their old stock without introducing errors and unwanted "features". I don't know how that happened.

I got the same stock from them - I like it just need someone to bed it.

Which same one? Black, Forest, or maybe even Woodland?

Not an expert, but I think the molds that McMillan uses for their Fiberglass stocks have to get replaced from time to time. (Not sure how many years or pressings they are good for). Sounds like their latest M1A mold might have a few issues per Ted Browns observations. I’m guessing the molds are pretty expensive to make as well.
I got a black one from them. It is the old style gel coat and not the painted pebble finish.

Ok,
Interesting. Thanks for the information. On their website, it looks like they show the pebble painted ones that SA Inc. used on the Super Match line.

When I called I spoke to Dave and Colleen Reese. Dave knew exactly what I was talking about and assured me it was the old style stock. It was. I should have ordered the camo before the feeding frenzy started over here!

Well, this thread motivated me to order one from them. Good price, and if I hang onto it for a later build, so be it.

I believe that mine is also dated 2015.

My mistake - They are Forest Camo which is darker than Woodland.
Forest Camo, like on most Springfield Inc. Super Match.

It pays to ask: I purchased a black one and in the comments section noted that " if you have any camo in stocks I would prefer that over black". Turns out the owner had one with a superficial scratch he could give me at a discount. Guess I need another rifle to put in it, now...
