Hi Gents, I've been browsing this forum for a couple of years one day dreaming of owning a m1a. Well one day just showed up and I am a proud owner of a scout! I absolutely love this thing and I'm looking for suggestions on upgrades. Also I just wanted to ask after shooting this thing for the first time how long is the hard on supposed to last! I mean is it like viagra after 4 hours should I seek medical attention!

Welcome to the club!

My "newbie" thread may have some useful info: m14forum.com/modern-m14/90198-my-new-scout-first-m1a.html

Some may chime in with suggestions of parts to swap out for USGI if you can find them, I have more of an "if it ain't broke, etc" opinion.

Something worth mentioning....for another type of rifle I own, I have a motley assortment of magazines of varying quality and reliability. I learned from that and stuck with CMI mags ONLY for my M1A.

Welcome from SoCal! Congrats on getting your M1A.
I lurked for years too, I shoulda just joined up immediately so good to have you.
I wouldn't replace anything yet, unless it's your SHTF rifle. I'd get a USGI extractor but save it for if your factory one breaks. A USGI fiberglass stock is a nice upgrade to an M1A, they are stiffer and built nicer than the factory synthetic stocks.

Welcome from Berks County, PA. Go ahead and start saving for your second rifle...no one here seems to be able to own just one. A Scout was my first M1A. I've changed the bolt guts to all USGI, installed a Sadlak NM operating rod guide, shimmed the gas cylinder, added a sling and swapped the original Boyd's stock for a USGI "Big Red" stock with a bipod mount.

Great rifle and the knowledge base here seems to be unlimited.

Thanks guys, I'm thinking the first thing I need to know is about ammo. I've been shooting some real crap from academy sports store down the road. Wound up breaking the extractor right off the bat! Springfield was great took a week and that included a trigger job. Now I'm thinking that federal match 168gr stuff. But I also seen some federal xm80. Is this stuff good enough for target shooting etc?

+1 to Dredsen, Privi Partizan 168gr Match is good ammo, some of my M1As like it and it's half the cost of FGMM, but FGMM is more accurate, you have to determine what trade off is worth it to you. It's excellent for long range steel targets.

Congrats on the rifle, I think you made a great choice off the bat. The 18-18.5" rifles seem to be the most versatile length for many shooters. Plenty of range, more sight radius than the 16" barreled rifles, able to use most surplus and factory ammo efficiently and handy (especially with a folding or collapsible stock).

Once you are comfortable and have obtained the best accuracy with the stock configuration you can try some accurizing mods to get more performance. You can add a full length rifle when you are ready.

Enjoy and add mags, some spare parts and ammo.

Welcome from Dallas! If you have an erection that lasts more than 4 hours seek immediate gun range time!
One of the best ways to learn about your rifle is to watch member tonyben's videos. Search him and there's a link to them in his signature. Just don't do it with an erection, that's just wrong.
