I finally picked up an M1A socom cqb the other day. Been wanting one for a while. My goal is to build it to be a mid to close range beast. I don't intend on it being just a "plinker" or a "safe queen". I've done some research and learned a lot about the weapon, but I still got a few questions. Being a huge car guy, is some of the grease I got laying around good enough to lube with? From what I've read, most 150gr 308 is good right? Just no light magnum etc.? What are reliable website to order things for the weapon? I've been screwed over on car parts before so I always ask. Thanks!!!

Yes, many of the lubes you probably have around your shop will work on your M1A. Bearing grease works well. Main thing with any grease is to not over apply- a dab will do, (or your glasses will get the excess when you fire the weapon) and wipe it off and reapply on a regular basis. Grease can attract grit - when it gets dirty wipe it off and reapply.
There are numerous reliable sources for "stuff" for your M1A. When you know what you may be looking for, post a question about the product and source here and someone who has tried, or has knowledge of that product will reply.

The M14 needs very little grease. A couple of ounces will last for years.
The best ammo for now is the Federal 168 OTM, with the little picture of an M1A Socom on the box. Run a couple of boxes thru the rifle before feeding it surplus fodder.
Windy City Sourcing, Jon Wolfe, Treeline and Fulton Armory are all excellent places to find parts, as well as Brownells.

As for grease it does not take a whole lot and one pound would last a long time. For quite a while now I have used the grease which is for disc brakes on both bolt guns(back side of locking lugs) and my LRB M14SA. Ammunition is similar to gasoline in that if you have a finely built engine you would not use a low quality gasoline in it for best performance. Many do use military surplus ammunition but the reason it is surplus is that it has been declared non serviceable by some military body. If you do use it suggest staying with such ammunition used by NATO members, supposedly all very similar or same in quality. Good feature of the 308 round is that there are volumes of information, data, etc. on the round and reloading data for your rifle is plentiful. First "things" I would suggest purchasing is a new or near new GI extractor and Tubbs springs for both trigger group and operating rod spring, Sadlak round spring guide, and find those items make for a smoother operation of the rifle and the Tubbs springs in the trigger group does make for an improved trigger pull. Trigger pull on these type rifles should be at or slightly above the 4.5lb pull range. Suppliers of parts on this site are a good place to look for whatever for your rifle, you will see them mentioned frequently. You have arrived at the right place for any and all details on your rifle and wish you the best with it.

Fulton Armory carries a lot things that you can't find elsewhere, but their prices aren't always the best. Check all the sources I listed.

Welcome from snowy MT. I got some Mobile 1 grease after a lot of reading. I like the specs and also the red color, so I can tell easier when there is too much. Ammoseek.com, sgammo.com are good places to start for ammo. I always check Numrich for parts. gunpartscorp.com A lot depends on the part.
