Can anyone give me any serial number range to stay under when looking for a poly m14 or a norinco. I am not real sure if norincos. I know heal stamped poly is what i am after. Serial numbers would help though.

I need one pre setp of 90 cause i want to do a m2a stock setup, i know FH is ok til 94 but i think i will have to have a 1990 or older one cause of the pistol grip mcmillian stock i want to put on it, thats why i am only interested in polytechs and not norinco's so much since its not clear about norinco's. I am interested in preban SA as well. But for what i am doing poly be best bet since i will be replacing most of it.

There is no way to tell that I know of. Mine has nothing on the heel and I have had it almost 12 years now. I got another one here to work on that the owner got 10 years ago and also nothing on the heel. But I have seen them with writing back there too about the same age. I am starting to think that a couple of importers removed the markings on the heel on some for whatever reason and refinished them. Just a wild guess but it wouldn't surprise me.

Regarding Pre Ban Poltech M14

In regards to marking on heel as a preban feature I have a Polytech M14 that has a flashsuppressor with bayonet lug that has serial number etc on side of receiver, what is intresting is that the first two numbers of the serial number are faintly engraved on the heel. I would also like to ask if Polytech copied the rear sight as both knobs on mine are marked WCE like a USGI one. I'm intending to have the Bolt replaced with a USGI one, other than that would any other modification be desired at this time.?

I hate to rain on anyones parade, but only about 200 PolyTech's came into the US with flash supressors and bayonet lugs. I have only seen one true preban PolyTech. At a gun show in 1989 a fellow was walking around the show trying to sell his PolyTech. If memory serves me correct, the finish was black park, not gray. Jack Lewis did a report on the PolyTech M14s, The Gun Digest Of Assualt Weapons/2nd edition, 1989, M14 in a magazine and the finish looked like black park also. If I had known then what I know now, I would have bought it. It wasn't until April 1994 that I purchased my first PolyTech M14s. For a long time dealers at the gun shows in the area were removing the faux flash supressor and replacing it with a GI with bayonet lug. I never heard of any dealer ever getting in trouble for doing so. Chances are that if you bought a PolyTech with a flash supressor and bayonet lug someone changed it from the original.

Regards
