Just a couple of pics....I'm a lever gun kinda guy. I decided to get this Marlin in 45-70 today. I will take some time tomorrow and shoot a few rounds down range. I hear this one can handle a little hotter loads so I'll see about some later from Big Bore.

The rifle is gorgeous man. Th wood, the forearm fitment to barrel, all of it. First time I've looked at one as clear in detail as here. I just bought a bunch of parts some NOS usgi magazines I found PLUS bidding a pristine '84 Rem 30-06 BDL on GB even though I'm just about done chasing it. But have this Marlin booked to memory for when I do get a streak of more money left over than month whenever it is. Thanks for showing it. Irons too.

Mind if I ask where you shopped it... like Buds maybe?

I already have this vintage Leather scabbard for my Lever actions. I don't know how old it is but it's very good condition considering the travels it's seen. It's a real saddle worn rig and just beautiful in it's leather work.

Ballard rifling?

Does your's have it? If not then stick with FMJ bullets otherwise you'll never get it sighted in or hit your intended target without luck.

Yes it's ballard rifling, and I'm going to stick with game ammo that's jacketed, or solid copper for faster velocities and flatter trajectories.

It should be a hoot and bear getter, not that we have them anymore in the area.

Wish I could see the pic's...

Interestingly enough, I too just bought a new .45-70. It is a Henry Steel, but the only thing that is going to go down it's bore is lead. Hard cast 405's driven to good velocity have a reputation for killing most anything they hit. USNA Buffalo Bore offers a 430gr lead flat nose at 1925fps. I am definitely going to have to hand load to afford to shoot mine.GI3

Congratulations on your new thunder boomer. .45-70's are just plain fun to shoot.USNA

Beautiful. I have an 1894 in 45 Colt. I haven't tried hot loads in it, but I read Buffalo Bore 45 LC hot loads can exceed 44 mag in ft/lbs. I can't imagine what a 45-70 would be like.

You should check out Skinner sights... Far better than stock.

Actually, recoil with factory standard loads is about the same as a .30-30.
That changes a bit when you go to hot 500gr loads. USN3

I decided to put more rounds down range using the Hornady LeveRevolution 325gr FTX ammo. Still kicks like a mule and doesn't get any easier with the number of rounds I put through it. I ordered the HSM 45-70 in 405gr since I have seen others state it's a tad better on recoil. Later this week I will find out when that ammo arrives. I suspect it's not going to get any better in reality and just should resign myself to not worry about it and enjoy it anyway. There probably isn't a way to soften the recoil much more, other than getting a padded shooting jacket, which I may do later.
