Aloha,

A while back, I believe someone asked on BR.Com if the stripes in a tiger striped wood stock were natural or man made... I would guess that it is possible (and probably already done) to have man made stripes added to a stock, but the tiger stripes that I have run across have been completely natural...

Recently, I got a hold of a couple of stocks that have some potential to be nice striped stocks (one has more figure than stripes though) and I thought I would post some pics to show what the stocks originally looked like and what they look like without the old stain and finish...

I hope you like the pics...

This the stock that I thought was Birch but might be something else... Although this stock has the potential to be really nice, it has some really deep gouges and lots of dings and dents.

This stock has potential but you really have to look hard to see anything. This one also has serious dings and dents that are too deep to raise with an steam iron (at least by me  )...

I stripped the old finish and stain... There was a tremendous amount of crud that was built up... Remember, these are USGI stocks, so it goes with the territory!

After stripping off the old finish and stain, the real potential started to show... the darker of the two is really showing potential for tiger stripes while the reddish/orange one shows really great figure but no really defined stripes... I think this wood may not be Birch, maybe a Beech? It has really nice horizontal grain pattern that is difficult to see in the pics, and really looks different from the other "Birch" stocks that I have been working on...

But the stripes as I see them are entirely natural and part of the wood. Since the stripes are not defined in some areas, I wish I could add some... but that is a trick I still have to learn...

I hope these pics were of interest...

I apologize in advance for posting so many pictures... I am sure SixTGunr will give me some scolding if I don't play by the rules...

Aloha and Best Wishes,

Tom O.

The strangest thing happened to me... looking at some of the dents and dings, I started to sand, normal SOP for me... but I noticed the stripes were now not so prominent on the darker one... Hmmm...

Anyway the strange part is that I can see that the stripes go completely through the forearm area of the stock... I wonder how to bring them back to life!!!

Well, I guess we'll see... I tried to Chromic Trioxide to see if the stripes would reappear but so far not...

Working with wood is interesting... and I am learning a lot!!!
