I have been wondering about this myself....

I saw a XGI at Clark Custom Guns, on the shelf, about 20 years ago - so I know it is possible. I have recently heard about the introduction, or reintroduction, of the XGI from Ruger - I am on the wait and see mode for the time being. If it is coming back out, I am sure one of the gun magazines are in a holding pattern waiting to make a scoop on the story...

A belated reply, but about 19-20 yrs ago I was waiting for the XGI to come into production. They announced, but never produced. Then I discovered Beretta BM-62s and M1As. Boy, am I glad they never produced that .308. Do yourself (and all your future generations) a big favor and look at those instead, expecially the Beretta. As Hans and Franz would say: "Hear me now, and believe me later." Years from now you will not miss the extra cash you paid, but you will likely be thanking me for the rest of your days, as will your progeny. Hold one of those in your hands, shoot one, and compare fit, feel, and quality. I like my Mini a lot, its a really good rifle. Thank John Garand. But Ruger cut corners and never worked out small problems (like barrel harmonics) that saddled owners with rifles that *could* have been world class, but were not. An extra $100 - 200 could have produced a masterpiece, instead it will cost you many times that for a custom work to get a good barrel, trigger, and stock. But you still will not have a Garand-type sight. And don't get me going on magazines.

Was taking with a customer who said he heard that Ruger was playing around with a mini in .308. Anyone else hear of this???
Yes, back in the late '70s, early '80s ... and what they ended up producing was the 7.62x39 Mini-30.

But I wholeheartedly agree with CW's thankfulness that they never produced that "real" Mini-30, because I am one of the many guys that was waiting on it ... and, IMO, it would have been money poorly spent for myriad reasons ...

Great...another caliber for an inaccurate rifle. I'm sure they won't make hi-cap mags for that which fit and feed either....

But if you are a Mini lover I apologize..........It's just that I COULDN'T WAIT to dump my Mini-30....

Will the recently produced 7.62x39 Mini-30 Ruger take the AKM/AK-47 magazines like the referenced article implied? Never heard of that, or a "Military version of the Ruger Mini-30."

". . . SturmRuger was commision to create the MINI-30 under request of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command as a weapon that Navy SEALs could take into Warsaw Pact countries and have the ability to use the enemies own ammo and magazines once the operator was out of his own ammo. The Military Version of the Ruger Mini-30 has the ability to use AK47 magazines."

The Mini 14 is really just a scaled down M14 with the gas system of the M1 Carbine. My 14, a GB model from the Clinton ban, was plenty accurate for killing rabid racoons or stray dogs. Indeed, I kept it when I sold off my AR's, which were plenty accurate but I just didn't like.

Also, the Mini is preferred by those who live in cold weather for its durability and reliability.

As far as a .308 version, I imagine the cost would place it up there with Springfield M1a's while having none of the panache of an M14.

I don't recall ever seeing an AC556 in the series. I did see a lot of SS Mini 14s with the government FH and bayo lug set up though.

To be honest - I don't think they ever even had full auto fire from any of their weapons in the series, at least not on their side of the fence.

But I could be wrong - it was a long time ago.....GI3

The late Jeff Cooper of Gunsite had one . A prototype I believe . There was a lot of problems at Ruger with accuracy and the gas block . The Gunsite folks I guess did something to it because it was accurate and reliable . Ruger would do well to try again

I read an article a long time ago. I really wish I could find it to reference, but in their experiment with making the Mini in .308, they couldn't overcome gas cutting, I believe it was occurring inside their gas block, but don't quote me.

Due to the expense of overcoming this flaw, the idea was shelfed as I believe it would have required a complete redesign.

I've heard good things from some that the newer Mini's are averaging much better accuracy in the last few years than the originals did. I've heard that they took the advice of a few smiths that would work over the originals like Clark.
I owned and used a 76 version of the Mini-14 years ago. Didn't care for the lack of accuracy then and eventually traded it. Haven't looked back.
