Finished up this beautiful USGI Big Red Birch for a forum member.

He carried a M14 in the Sandbox and we worked together to pick this stock for him which will be with him a long time. I did the following - National Match Front Ferrule Modification, installed the Sadlak Heavy Front Rail for a bi-pod, Bedded the Trigger Pads and refinished all stock hardware. I used a new process for the butt plate backing plate (I really like it). The stock is shown with my barreled receiver for final test fitting.

This stock wanted to stay darker and I just worked with that - I think she looks mean and this is one I would have picked! This stock is one that I hand picked on my final Fred's run in September.

Enjoy a few pics - M1Army

This shows the back plate refinish!

Ren,

what is a GMAC ??
I need to give Ren a call - I was traveling all week!

Wes, It seems you forgot to tell us about how you do the backing plate.
The backing plate - I always blast the backing plates and was painting them with Aluma-Hyde II dark parkerizing. Those always looked very nice, but this time I used a different dark park paint from brownells that also included a final step of baking at 300 deg for 30 minutes. The color is great and the baking seemed to give a very uniform hard finish. It is more expensive, but you can do a number of backing plates with one can and I like it better especially for the elite stocks.

That is absolutely gorgeous!! I haven't had a wood stock M1A/M14 since I was in the corps!!! Both of mine currently where synthetic stocks, but now I'm thinking I might need another with the classic wood!!!
Great job!
