What would cause this? When I load and unload my m1a mags the release switch is not smooth so it makes loading/unloading mags a choir DI4

What should I do to fix this issue?

Can post pics if needed (don't now why I would though)

Thanks,

I had a problem with the mag release not completely latching onto any magazines while inserting them unless I pulled in the magazine real hard on a polytech m14 I have. I ended up taking the trigger group off and drifting the pin out for the mag release and then sanding down the mating point on it until USGI, CMI, and T57 magazines functioned perfectly. I could of sanded down the surface on the magazines but I would rather do it once and besides mag releases are pretty easy to come by. My polytech is buttery smooth now and havnt had a problem since. Just make sure to sand a little then re insert the mag release then test, then take it apart sand a little then put it back together and test, and keep doing it little by little till it is perfect. That's what I did.

Ok I'll try that GI2 When i push in the release it makes like a crackling sound, like there's something in it. How do I take apart the trigger group?

Kinda a newbie here

You don't have to take apart the trigger group to access the roll pin that secures the mag release. You only have to take the trigger group out of the stock. Have you done this yet?

I see from your initial post (that was closed for some reason) you have a 1997 Loaded. Is this the rifle you're having the problem with?

yes it is, I took apart the trigger group anyway (before I saw your post) using tonyben's vid.

What should I do with the pin?

When you say, "take apart" do you mean you disassembled the trigger group, or do you mean you unlatched it from the rest of the rifle? Did you punch the roll pin out of the trigger housing?

If you did, was there a problem with the roll pin or spring? [parts 40,41,42]

It could be the magazine well in the fiberglass stock creating this issue. If you have the action out of the stock, take a magazine and run up the mag well. It should go through without binding against the inside of the stock.

I'd only punch it out (1/8" punch) if there is a problem. Does the mag latch feel funny when you move it through its range of motion? It should be smooth and silent with no wobble on the pin.

Mag is good with the stock, I took out the spring and cleaned it up and put it back in (cleaned insides to) and now it doesn't make any noise or "crunchy" sounds GI1

Would you recommend the Sadlak M1A mag release? Now that I got this release working I was thinking about upgrading it.

And thanks everyone for the tips GI5

I'll attempt to answer this question from your closed thread.

Well I picked up my first M1A about a month or so ago, Been to busy to really "break it in" (work and school), I need help as I am new to the platform.

What should I look for to tell if it has USGI Parts?

The serial number is 106xxx, and is a Loaded model.
A Loaded in the 106xxx range has a very high probability of being all USGI (except for the barrel and receiver of course). I have a 1997 Loaded (107xxx) that's all USGI as far as I can tell.

There are some parts that can't be identified as USGI unless you removed them from sealed wrapping, but there are parts (bolt, op-rod, hammer, trigger housing, sight base, windage and elevation knobs, and others) that have drawing/part numbers and/or manufacturing ID that can confirm where they came from.

You should post the stampings you find on the parts. There are people here who live for this stuff and are interested in USGI parts content for associated serial number range.

Or you can just take the stampings you find and post them directly in the search function on the forum. Every stamping ID I have on my rifle was discussed previously and can be found pretty easily.

Before I got here, I didn't even know what USGI parts were. Finding out my rifle was full of them was like a surprise birthday party six months from my birthday.

My EBR and Scout have the extended mag release from Sadlak. It is a great upgrade and I haven't had a problem with them and I don't think I have ever seen anyone have a problem with them.

Ok I will do that in the next couple of days once I get some free time GI1

EDIT: here are some of the numbers:

Bolt: 7790186 SA Z1B
OP Rod: 7267064 TRW
Hammer: 5546008-HR-N
Tirgger Housing: 7267030 TRW

I don't know where the other part numbers would be.

Under the rear sight behind the bolt is a number as well:

Those are USGI parts. The number inside the receiver is from the commercial supplier of the castings I believe. You have to disassemble the sight to see the USGI ID for the sight base. I wouldn't worry about that right now, but you can ID the knobs easily. Some safeties also have manufacturer's ID. Check those, too.
