He might be out in the middle of nowhere. We go out to the grass lands all the time and when the rounds hit the dirt they sometimes bounce and go whizzing to god only knows, however there is absolutely nothing for miles where we go, other than the occasional cow or prairie dog...

Get some tracer rounds and repeat that same firing event just before dark.
You'll be amazed at how many rounds ricochet off water.
