I'd emulate the specs of my 3-gun champ friend's AR:
18 inch Scout. Sadlak and GI internals. Trijicon Accupoint 1-4X (green) on Sadlak airborne mount. Whatever is MOST effective muzzle brake.
If you live in a free state, perhaps a Vltor Modstock (easier to reload in three gun with pistol grip, and can raise your buttstock to see through scope.
1X for run and gun stages, 4X good for the 300+ yard shots.
I used a standard M1A for my first 3 gun a while back... had national match sights but otherwise stock. Did fine. The length was a bit unweildy on some of the "shoot through barrier" stages but otherwise it was fine.

Yes I watched all your videos and the links you provided in the other threads. They were entertaining P_G I went to the links you provided for (upda?) SInce I live in Sandy and am not too far away I was thinking about trying a match, i would be in the .308/.45/pump 12 division too
I've used mine in a few 2 gun matches with irons (I don't have a shotgun...yet...), didn't do too bad considering everybody else was using ARs with red dots.
For those that are new to 3gun the M1A does have a home in the Heavy Metal or He Man Division. The division name and specific equipment requirements varies with each individual match (no national governing body). The most common aspects of the division requirements are a pump 12ga shotgun, .30 cal battle rifle, and .45 cal pistol.
Some individual matches require that the pistol be a 1911 and that you can only shoot 00 buckshot and slugs for the 12ga (true He Man division).
Recently some of the major matches have introduced a Heavy Optics division which allows you to mount a scope on the rifle. Also some matches allow 1x or Red Dots in their iron sighted divisions (TI and HM).
As for long range targets; on the East Coast long range is typically 500yds or less. West Coast is usually around 600-800yds. In 3gun bipods are only legal in Open division so most long range is shot by monopodding off the magazine and very few people have slings on their rifles.
If you have even a passing interest in this sport check out:
Those two websites contain a huge knowledgebase on the 3gun game, and list many of the local, state, and regional matches.
Competition shooting is a great way to spend a weekend and get the toys out of the safe. Whether it's a 3gun, USPSA, IDPA, or an IPSC match find one in your local area and give it a try. Most shooters I know will bend over backwards to help a new shooter try their sport.
thanks for the links ive spent a few hours over there the
last couple days. i will not be making it to the mar 19 match but im planning on the following event! should be fun
I used a Garand, Colt .45 auto, and a 12 gauge 870 in three-gun last summer. I would really like to park my Garand (just for three-gun GI1) and go to an M1A.
I used my CMP rack-grade Garand for a three-gun a couple of years ago (before I got an M1A). It impressed the hell out the old guys, especially the Korea and Vietnam Vets!
The hits on the long-range gongs were easy to call for the RO's. Some of the guys shooting AR's had to hit at least twice to get a solid score.
