I think the E2 stock may be legal because it was officially adopted as a stock for the M14. I believe the definition for service rifle is that it has to be in original configuration and the E2 stock is original military issue. If the pistol grip is the question then why are AR's allowed?
Get a copy of the NRA High Power Rifle Rules. It has a diagram of the legal dimensions of an M14 stock. It also states a standard type stock. Though the E2 was official issue, it is not legal for Service Rifle Competition.
Oh , I tried! Tried every argument but since no 'standard' rifles were made or issued in this configuration , ya can't do it. Its a shame because I , as well as probably everyone else , shoot the E2 stock better.
