So I go to town yesterday evening for my monthly trip to a real city. I dropped the wife of at target and I go to gander Mtn. I was looking around and stopped at a display of binos. 3 sets where leupold and all 3 said made in China on them. I never thought I would see it but I guess money talks and american jobs continue to walk...away. These where not dirt cheap either $180-280 range. They make all those damn TV commercials talking about they only have so many employees and only one shop I guess that's BS too. That really sucks to me because I would save the extra money to try and buy their american made product. My next scope will more than likely be a Vortex or Burris sad but true. Has anyone noticed if their rings are made here anymore or are they made of rice metal too?

Leupold has outsourced to China and Japan for a looooooooong time, Vortex and Burris are made almost entirely overseas in Japan/Phillipines/China etc...almost every binocular company does this, even some Zeiss are Chinese...

The meopta meopro 4-16-50 is awesome. I have $3000 dollar scopes and I can't tell the difference between the $650 meopta or the 3k swaro and Zeiss optics that I own. I bought the meopta last, with the turret. It list for $895.00. I called optics planet and offered them 650.00. They took it. Make sure that you get the turret option. Kenton gives you a custom turret...

I got rid of all my Leupold. If that helps

I'm not getting rid of the 4 leupolds that I have but I have been eyeballing that same meopta you speak of from midway USA. It just shocked me to see that. I don't go in the chain stores to often I mostly order my stuff.

I have read that optics firms utilize both Chinese and Japanese lens firms but do so on a bid basis. Scope mfg. sets the specs of the various lens required and then the lens firms offer bids to produce according to the desired specifications. It is up to the scope mfg. to accept or reject the bids and if they can not come to an agreement, the specifications/quality demands are lessened and more bids are sought. I have always used Leupold scopes of one form or the other and been quite satisfied due to not only performance, but what seemed to be a reasonable price range. The latest offerings by Leupold are getting way up there in prices and apparently the lens mfg.'s have upped their prices for producing those lens. Local shooter here swears by Bushnell, others Night Force, Weaver, and on and on, lot of just personal preference involved I would say.

A few years back Leupold added an imported line to compete with the cheaper bino's & spotting scopes being offered by other manufacturers . Leupold still makes their gold ring models but expect to pay much more.

Leopold Rifleman Series

For the first time I can afford a Leopold. I like the scope, I have purchased 2 now and I am a satisfied customer.
I had no idea they were made in China.
Do we make anything anymore?
Could we do it again?
Every 54 minutes in 1944 B24's we're rolling off the assembly line. Thousands of tanks, artillary pieces, millions of rounds of ammo, machine tools and the list goes on.
Could we do it again?
Sorry to steal your thread.

Leupold still makes products here. But there line of made elsewhere stuff is rapidly exspanding. I like the leupold I new from the back in the day when you didn't have to read the damn box, if it said leupold it was a real leupold! That being said nikon used to be strictly Japanese know read the box on them and you will find the lower end models made all over from the Philippines to China. Hell my soon to be wife was making Christmas deserts with Reese's peanut butter cups a Hershey's product, she said these wrappers are not like they used to be. Sure as hell I read the the bag and it said maid in Mexico!!!

All this "anti" talk always cracks me up.
I buy the best quality product that I can afford. I can care less about the country of origin. Our country has become a service based vs industrial based economy. Just like we evolved from an agriculture based to an industrial based economy. Change is just that, change.
In 1944, how many products were being produced for the civilian population? Dang near zero, that's how many. http://www.autonews.com/article/20111031/CHEVY100/310319970/no-new-cars-but-that-didnt-stop-u.s.-automakers-dealers-during-wwii
Almost ALL manufacturing was dedicated to the war effort so that is a straw man argument. God forbid we ever have to experience that again.

Funniest thing is the that people actually type these comments on an electronic device (computer or cell phone) that was probably built outside the USoA.
