Good question
yes to carry main multi-purpose rifle at all times but I would only use it on last chance option for hunting . for all the reasons posted before. not best use of resource 1 = best knock down power of hunting round to plant game on the spot not to trail game into trouble , if noise is not a opsec concern then I would use a 12 gauge with slug up close and at night. if noise is a small concern the same round same time but offsite from base some distance away to be field dressed and back home before sunlight, so searchers would be looking in other area and not near base . if noise is major & serious concern then bow and arrow for kill in and out no real sound with this option 1could hunt in a area near others and not sacrifice opsec or at base camp and not raise noise threat. another option is the 22lr in a rifle with some sort of suppresion or muffling= small report and gives option of smaller game harvested hit a squirell or rabbit or groundhog with 7.62/5.56 and not much left for the meal ! so if you use shotgun you can switch from slugs to buckshot to # 7 shot for birds or small game.
still carry big rifle but save that ammo for real danger when needed !
