Hello,
My pap had passed away in 2015. He was a marine sergeant and the corp was his life. He was a war veteran in Iwo Jima and was awarded many medals during his service including a purple heart. Unfortuanetly even though he was so fond of this part of his life he would never talk about it or explain much of anything.

When he passed I was left all of his things and I knew of the m1A but I have no clue what I have as far as quality and identifying anything about it. Anyone able to help me it would be greatly appreciated!

Here are a few pictures of what I have in front of me. There is numerous additional accessories and parts to this gun. I will try and post the rest when I can.

Awesome post! Love the gun porn! I recommend you call Springfield and give them the serial number, first. They can tell you how it was configured and when it was made. There are videos here and on line that show how to field strip and clean her. There are a couple of good books you might want to read.
You have a fine family heirloom and a useful tool. Hopefully you will pass her on to one of yours. Don't be afraid to shoot her, but also don't be surprised if another one grows.

The M1A likes certain ammo. Federal makes some especially for the M1A(identified on the box) and also makes Federal Gold Medal Match which is the gold standard for the M1A. DO NOT use any Magnum or Superperformance ammo in this rifle.! There are many posts on this forum on what is acceptable for safe use in her. Beautiful example. Take good care of her and she will take care of you. Video's by TonyBen on here show the care and feeding of this fine rifle. You have come to the right place to learn about her. So get a cup of coffee(or if you are like Polack- a beer) and start reading- you'll be here a while.

Welcome aboard.

Additional items.

I am not sure when he got it to be honest. I didn't even know he had it. We always talked about going shooting together and never did. I knew of his common rifles most people own and pistols but never knew he had this or the garand. Honestly didn't know he had most of the stuff because he would only talk about it to other veterans or on sites like this. I was only 16 at that time so I understand him not telling me and don't know what happened when he served if something bothered him or not so I always respected it and never asked. I was hoping he would tell me on his own one day but never got the chance.

Thanks for the info everyone. Every bit helps because reading on websites one says one thing and the next site says it the opposite was and throws me in a circle lol

It was my grand father. This is the M1 he has. And a few other things I looked up to find more about. He has a ton more that I need to find out information on too but have not got a chance yet.

Welcome aboard...nice rifle an set up.

I am curious...in post #1 you stated you knew about the rifle.....in post #14 you stated you didn't even know he had it.

Also curious if you plan on keeping or selling the rifles.

Also why is this in the Bill Ricca section?

Sorry my apologizes. Don't know if this stood out to you about number 1 and 14 is why you ask or if you think I'm a liar. Either way i dont understand the importance of what it matters when im just trying to get information and advice on this rifle. I only say this because on the internet regardless what site or social app etc. There is usually always at least one person that has to try and start drama. Im sure you know that. Im not trying to be smart with you but if thats your plan please dont waste my time. If that's not the case and you just caught it by chance and was curious then no problem I will explain everything for you but will take a while to read. If you need anything else in the future or a question please send me a message because I did notice you can do that earlier today exploring the site.

I been typing and erasing to keep short but for me to get to my point and you to understand you will need to know the story or it wont make sense or seem like my pap and I were not close when we were. So my apology for any typos grammar errors etc. as well but this is taking long enough.

As far as why i posted this here while i just was talking about the messages in the site i noticed. Obviously im new to this forum...1 day ago i joined but I didn't join to help others with knowledge about the questions because I don't know so I got my post done and waited for a reply after reading sites and one says one thing and the other says the complete opposite.

I noticed people talking about similar things so i clicked and posted this remember I'm new and don't have a clue how to use this site. Then realized i could have done it somewhere else but it was too late. I dont know how to transfer this post to another thread or if its even possible. So my lack of knowing the site caused a mistake.

This is a good example why I joined because I don't know much about this gun and that's what I'm trying to learn. I don't want to make a mistake with it and cause damage to it because something little I didnt know. i want to make sure i take care of it because i know it meant a lot to him for how much stuff im finding for it and the garand. He took time to get these so they were of importance to him. So i want to take time to learn about them. How do i know that if i didnt even know he had the gun? If your not a gun person or it didn't mean much to you then you wouldn't probably spend the money to buy it and throw it in the basement for anything over a few hundred dollars. For how much money he put in his rifles and how much time serving in the marines plus get all the extra stuff for the rifles (it may not seem like much to you because I don't have a clue what you have nor do I need to know, but to me that previously didn't really have a connection to this rifle I can tell it was important to him.)

I never had time to learn much about guns.
Everyone's life is different. My pap was the only family member i had that knew a ton of information about guns and enjoyed every bit of it even if it was a 17HMR. He got into it from his dad a little but 2as taught most of it in the marines. Other then him my other family mainly just knows the common guns in our areas like a 30-30, 30.06, 270, 223, 243, 222, and the 300 and 400 weatherby all the most common hunting ones in my area the weatherbys my dad used to go on hunts in canada for elk moose and caribu. Im not saying that these are the only guns we ever seen or own im trying to give you an example of more common ones in our area.

We don't care if someone in town has a 50 cal. If they have the money for it and want it, have time to shoot it, are collectors, or whatever reason it's their choice. My family is all self employed and don't get much free time to learn about a ton of guns. Especially enough to feel confident that we are sure something isn't a replica when some are so close to the real deal.

I know all of who read this probably know about these rifles but you turned it into a type of hobby and taught yourself as you kept buying, maybe a collector, or was raised around more guns that are uncommon to be found in the area then i was around it. I would have more knowledge on it from my pap im sure but i wasnt lucky enough for that to happen. So I'm just trying to reach out for help to let me know what it is, I read about a scout, standard, national model, loaded, and super match. One site says if it has this it's a national other site says if it has the same thing the other site said it's a scout. If I keep reading sites the next one will probably say it's a pellet gun. I just wanted to get opinions on what I have from people that have experience and knowledge about them rather then Barney the dinosaur on a YouTube video.

Again all of this typing and time because the way i read it and took it from what you said i was a liar. Its like I was selling a hot pink pistol as a ak47. That would be a reason to suggest something is wrong and maybe question someone. But not something as simple as this that takes so long to explain and try and defend myself so people are not thinking I'm a liar over something so little. Maybe i took it wrong but if that's why you brought it up I'm not going to look like a fool or liar over it. If not then sorry and im wasting my time explaining it all So detailed so I'm not seen the wrong way.

When I talked to my pap last about shooting if I remember correctly he said he was going to get the m1a or it may have been the M1 which I have no clue because like I said I was 16 at the time and was more busy chasing girls and drinking around fires at a woods party.

I still wanted to go shoot thing's regardless of caliber or model etc. What kid wouldn't? I had no clue or wasnt even told about the thought of the other gun. He may have got it way later. Not sure. All i knew then was It goes bang then target goes boom and being a teenager that's awesome and i got to hang out with him.

We only got to go together a few times because he moved a little over a hour from here. between high school, the young age wild hair that you know everything and are invisible to the world. Then it was work and him moving a little over a hour away, his girlfriend that lived her life in the bar, which her last husband was a vet so she was a member at vfw and legion etc. He didnt mind because he got to go talk to new peoole as well that he became friends with. With all that then me ending up later starting a family and my own business and him having a new establed life and friends down there we didnt see each other or communicate anywhere near as much as we used to. It was mainly text, Facebook and a call here and there but phone conversations were short. So in a way I knew about whichever one it was but wasn't positive he bought it and didn't nag him questioning about it because honestly at that age my mind was not on what he said other then M1 forgot about it and didn't really put any thought of what the gun actually was or that it was what he had by his side when he served. I was young and never thought about him passing or not having time etc. So I never made sure I took notes on details that he may or may not do or buy. After we didnt really talk much about shooting again or brought up anything about that gun. Maybe he forgot as well or thought he told me he had it or wanted to show me when we finally got time to go. Never the less our conversations were less frequent and went to more of riding fourwheelers. That was his new thing to do down where he moved because he could ride all over. He was in town before and never could go very far. It was also more of a how have you been, anything new with you, when are you gonna come visit type of thing.

He never left to come up because he was busy in his woodworking shop he had built there. Insulation, wiring, etc. there and I never took time and went down because of the new busy life i was learning to adjust but who thinks about the day when someones time is up you ran out of time.

As they say time flys before you know it. So i never found out if he got it or not but hopefully that helps answer it for you. I just knew he talked about getting one. not sure if its because since he moved we went from talking about going out shooting to his fourwheeler etc and it kind of got lost along the way or if he thought told me and actually didnt, or if maybe when i did go down or he came up he wanted to surprise me with the new gun. Also with how busy life was for me at the time I honestly didn't even remember to ask him again about it either.

So in a way I knew he said he was getting one, but didn't know when he planned on doing it. Then as conversations got less frequent and when it did happen it wasn't on the subject any longer it kind of got lost in the past. So I was very surprised when I seen the one rifle there because he never told me he finally got it in and I was shocked to find the iwo jima edition garand there. But he was in Vietnam so that may have been more of a subject about when he was in the military item and never really wanted to talk much about vs a new rifle.

I never honestly asked anything about the military when he served because my mom and gram always said not to. My mom never found the reason either as far as I know I just remember her telling me when she was younger she found his purple heart and asked him what it was and she said he was furious. The maddest she ever seen him. He apologized to her later for scaring her but told her never to go in his things again and that was the only thing she ever heard from him about anything to do with being in the military. To stay out of it lol

Now back to the real reason for this post. No I don't want to sell them I just wanted to know about them and any tips etc. This is something that i know we enjoyed doing together even though it was only a few times and something we been trying to do again. It meant a lot to him for his history with the rifle when he was depolyed but means as much to me because it was important to him too and its one thing we always tried to make happen again but never did. I found things before I wasn't sure what it was to and put in my maybe I'll figure it out later pile and I'm glad I did. Now after going thru totes I knew were gun items most are parts to these guns.

Some I'm posting is not really helping me with the gun but it's stuff he had with them. If anyone can identify something other then the obvious that some are bullets and gun cleaning clothes would be great! The one kit I found a tiny round jar type thing it has a yellow lid clear bottom. Its in the second pic. Any ideas? Also the 5th one like brass knuckles knife? Room

Sorry again if I took it the wrong way but when I read it that is the way i took it.

Now someone else told me this is a national match? Is that the same as a loaded? I'm hoping it's just another name for it people say because I have read about atleast 8 different model names and I thought there was only 3 different ones?

New2M1A814,

I sure would like to see the headstamps on the Spanish military surplus ammunition from July 1963 and a few out of the Open boxes with the lose rounds.

Thanks.
