... is there really anything wrong with leaving it off?

The clip guide is a little loose on my rifle, so I figured I'd replace the roll pin and reinstall the guide using blue Loctite to keep it secure before it just fell off and possibly get lost. Then I thought why even put it back on? The only reason I can see keeping it would be so I could use an empty clip as a bolt hold, but I don't have an empty clip. I do not plan on competing in service rifle matches, and I may eventually install optics and I'll need to remove the guide again.

Is there any good reason to put it back on, other than it will look odd if I don't?

Some who never load rounds from a clip still use an empty clip inserted into the guide to keep the bolt out of the way while cleaning.
If the rifle commonly has a scope mounted over the receiver that would make it a mute point.

Better to have it and not need it.
That's actually a good enough reason. Looks like it can be used as a bottle opener, too.

It's staying on.

Is there a better way than blue Loctite to keep it secure? And I wonder what was keeping it tight all those years? When I bought my rifle it was tight as can be and now only the roll pin is keeping it on.

I would leave it on just so I did not break off one of the ears on the receiver?GI2

Skip putting it back on, go straight to getting a good solid scope mount first, asap. You can get the scope later. I remove the scopes from mine to get them into the safe, and the rifles don't look odd with the scopes off like they would look like parts are missing with the clip guide off.

Drilled a hole in it and cut threads for mounting a rail. But first I had to aneal it because its the hardest part of this rifle.
