We had a coyote show up and he had his eye on one of my pugs.
He was about 40 yards out in the back of my home so I couldn't take him with a real firearm due to it being a rural community.
I took my dad's 1960s era Sheridan pump BB/pellet rifle and did 7 pumps, loaded one BB and aimed for his chest.
He jumped up a little, ran about 10 feet and dropped like a bag of potatoes.
A clean lung shot.
He was a very healthy male, big ole bushy tail and nice fur.
He had been dining like a king on the feral cats that some folks were feeding as no responsibility pets.

Unfortunately I have 2 acres and live next to a xmas tree farm. Beautiful in winter when we have snow. We had a family of foxes raised behind my house for 3-4 years now. They stay in my lower section. Don't come near the house since I rescue pittbulls. Usually they are former fighters and have a very high prey drive! Unfortunate is because I live across the street from an elementary school. Federal law is no discharge within 1000 ft. I would have to go almost to the end of my property to get a good shot!
My next door neighbor raises Guinea hens. They spend their life loving to eat ticks. Last year he released 15. They did not last 2 nights! LOL. Between the hawks, yotes, owls, foxes, and whatever else is out there!

The Older I get the weaker my kill impulse gets.
I’m getting there, but I still greatly enjoy hunting pigs and ducks, quail and grouse too. I pass on small deer though, spikes, forks and 3’s are safe when I’m afield, 4’s should be concerned late in the season, 5‘s and up need to hide from mid-September through the 3rd week of October…I’m a big guy that doesn’t climb trees to sit in a stand, I’m easy to spot and typically loud when on the move, it’s a fairly fair game most days…

It's been an interesting week here on the Upper Applegate. Way back, we captured a few raccons with live traps. The wife didn't appreciate me shooting them so the traps. Nothing bothered us for a long while until my wife raised a couple of chickens to supplement our egg supply. About two weeks ago one of the new chickens disappeared and the neighbor lost several ducks and chickens. So, last week we brought out the old trap. In the last 6 nights we have caught one racoon and three foxes. The fox we got last night was in the trap only a couple of hours after it was set. The wife still won't let me shoot them. I've been taking them down to California (it's only 7.8 miles down the road) and turning them loose. They had best not find their way back.

It would cost some money but it would be interesting if you could have them Tagged or Chipped to see if they made their way "back home" from the 7 -> 8 journey.

Ted:

I bet you see that fox again. I trapped a female raccoon that got into the attic of our house in the city. I released her 10 miles away in a nature area, and she was back in 2 days. I had to kill trap her the next time.

Once they are trapped in a cage trap they won't ever get trapped in one again. They learn the first time.

We live in a wooded area on a creek and enjoy the wildlife. I just draw the line when they start destroying property.

I'd hate to have to shoot one of these beautiful animals, but when they get a whiff of livestock and show no fear of 2 leggeds let alone kids they leave little choice unless like Ted take them to california to tear up wokeists which is too far for us. This old boy in CO. killed a mountain after his friend asked him to for hitting a lot his livestock. This got their fanook governor Polis and marxist controlled residents hysterical who set state wildlife jackboots on him. Ex-NFLer Derek Wolfe kills massive mountain lion terrorizing area. I knew they can grow big, but LOOK at the sheer size of this beast. Must have been eating good.

Well, over the last week I have now caught 4 foxes. I don't know if it's the same ones coming back. I haul them 8 miles away, over four bridges and turn them loose in a remote area below Elliot Creek in California. By the way, they can't seem to resist my wifes buckwheat banana pancakes. That's what we bait the trap with. Terrible waste of good pancakes. I never realized that there were so many foxes wandering through our acre on the Applegate.

I don't like killing anything anymore either. I do however have an unchangeable rule.
If something means to do harm to my family or my family pets regardless if it walks on 2 or 4 legs, it will pay with it's life.

Not that expensive and I bet you'd make a fortune on the video.

I wouldn't want to handle them outside of the cage. They are mean little critters. I'm thinking spray a spot of paint on their back so I can tell if they are coming back. I didn't set the trap last night.

Very shortly after I moved in to my present home, I heard a scratching and thumping on my roof, about 11 PM, so I went outside with a big flashlight and my 10-22. There was a large raccoon trying to find an alternate way off my roof, because I was blocking its apparent access.
Well, being half asleep and thinking a .22 doesn't really make that much noise, I popped it whan it was near the edge, and it cooperated nicely, fell with a plop. Well, a .22 DOES make a lot of noise at 11PM. I tossed the dam thing over into the ravine and ran inside, hoping I hadn't disturbed the neighbors too much that they'd call the authorities.
Nothing else happened, and I've since live-trapped a couple more. The traps, with the raccoons still in them, get a float test in the Bay for about 15 minutes, after which I recover the traps, etc. etc.

You might want to paint their tail with some yellow paint to see if they come back and you catch them again😎

Skunks are more fun to catch and release. I use a small tarp.
The no kill trap I use has two openings.
When the critter steps on the trigger both sides fall. I’ve caught two in one shot.
Before I bought the Live trap
I shot one out of my tree, he landed on my roof and then fell to the ground and walked away. I decided right then to use a larger caliber.

Here in Ohio it is unlawful to release trapped animals. That being said I would spray paint the backs of the critters, take them a few miles away and release them, Now if their stupid enough to get caught again, they get a Lead Aspirin

My wife likes to feed the birds and deers in our backyard. Them pesky raccoons eat more than all the other animals together and she won’t let me target practice on them either, so I have a good idea how you feel.
