Your not the only one to pelt someone with brass from your M1. It happens to me frequently. I usually choose my shooting location to avoid hitting others but sometimes you can't. Most people are cool if you warn them. I had one guy get pissed at me after I had asked to trade places on the range due to just this fact. I warned him!
My favorite M1 throws the first 7 rounds forward right about 6 feet, round 8 directly right 10-12 feet. Usually over the head of the person to my right but onto whomever is next to them.
P.S. Occationally my clips bonk me on the top of the head but not often! 8O
