I may have a problem

But I'm not sure. I'm a newbie to this board so here it goes. Last Saturday I was shooting my CMP International Harvester, accuracy was good, everything was going fine until this bolt action shooter next to me scoping in his rifle complained that the last fired round would eject the shell off to the side, hitting him on top of his head. The first seven shots ejected to the front at about 1:00 o'clock. Is this an extractor problem and if it is how do I fix it?
Thanks.

It deflects differently because the clip is being ejected at the same time.

HH is right, there is nothing wrong with your rifle.
Thanks guys, that's what I thought. The guy next to me was sure irritated. I even told him we could take turns firing so that he would not get hit. He seemed to be irritated by that also. Oh well, I'll try to get the end space next time. :D
Ya coulda swapped places with the guy on the right.
Some yahoos are irritated no matter what, he'll blame his bad groups on you, till the next time on the line and someone's shooting a .22lr three positions away and is bothering him with the tremendous blast...
I had the same problem with a guy two lanes over from me one time when I was shooting my M1A. Every third casing would land on his bench while he was trying to shoot his Browning A-bolt and he was livid that my rifle sent its casing over in his direction. The funniest thing about it was that his girlfriend thought it was funny and that made it even funnier .
problem

what was the problem you were shootin a garand ;) 8) kcr
Wait till you put a hot one down there shirt then they will move to the left.
Or the once a year shooter show's up to sight in his high price deer gun and gets irritated cause you shot better than he doe's with iron sight and the noise and ejected case's are making him pull his shot's. 8O
I have got a good story about hot brass. I am a squad leader currently deployed in Afghanistan and several months ago one of my team leaders was burnt by some of my hot brass.

We were conducting some down vehicle live fire drills. We had a convoy of four vehicles and our engineers would blow some demo to represent an IED. A predetermined vehcile would be designated as the disabled vehicle. The trailing vehicle would act as the extraction vehicle, while the two remaining vehicles would put bullets down range. My alpha team leader was sitting in the seat behind me and when the demo went off we both started laying down fire. My brass was raining down on him as I fired and I heard him start screaming a long list of not-so-nice words. He also stopped firing. I figured that his weapon malfunctioned, so I increased my rate of fire. He kept screaming. After we ceased fire, I found out what really happened...

Prior to the drill, he purposely turned up the collar on his DCUs to help keep brass from falling into his body armor. But he also had a big hole in the crotch of his pants, and this genius does not were underwear. So a hot piece of brass falls into his pants and burns his naughty-bits. As soon as he felt it hit flesh, he jumped up and then it rolled off of his "bits" and fell into the seat of his pants. And then he sat down on it, burning his backside as well. That is why he was cursing so bad, and the whole time I was increasing my fire. After the cease fire, I was handing him bottle after bottle of the only ice water that we had with us that day. He poured most of our supply on his burned parts. The rest of that 120 degree day we drank 90 degree water. Luckily there was not permanent damage, but it sure makes a hell of a story.

djltx, I know what you mean too. I get over to the range and there's some guys shooting their bolt action sporters and their .22s and what all. One guy likes to sit down at the other end of the range and play with his .22; when I get the Garand out and run a clip he'll start hollering about my Garand being loud. He ain't wearing ear protection either. :?

I've found that if I don't take my Garand with me, I usually wish I had. :) There's always some bunch of guy there that make me want to step up between them (in the empty positions) and run a clip. Just something about the '06 blast and that PING...

Aloysius, Good one. :) :)

Althrough true, not entirely accurate. During normal firing, the op rod will actually hit the casing on the return stroke, deflecting the case forward into the 1 to 2 o'clock range. On the last shot, the op rod is held open, allowing the last round of brass to be ejected to the side. It really doesn't have anything to do with the clip.

I would just count shots and when I got to the last shot, load another clip.
I guess I would have been irratated too if I had a hunting rifle with a nice scope and was grouping shots just a well as the guy next to me with open sights and a fifty year old rifle. :D Not saying I'm a great shot, just nearly as good as he was with a scope. ;) .

I have the same problem bubba. They're even more pissed when they realize your groups are better than theirs and you put 5 mags downrange, total 100 rounds, in the same time they put maybe 10 or 20 on target. THEY'RE JUST JEALOUS!!! What's really fun is to use a sling firing prone while they're using a bipod. OOOPS! We're 'sposed to be talking '14's big brother here. Anyway, you get the point. Just try to imagine the first Japanese or German soldiers with the k98 or arisaka bolt guns shock when they encountered GI's with 8 round Garand's!!
Well the funniest thing was when the RO called a cease fire to go check your target. My Dad and I walked out to check my shot group, and this guy and his old lady follwed us. While we were looking at and pasting up my target he says to his girlfriend " I'm not even on the paper, (we were at the hundred yard line), I guess I should have zeroed the scope after I had it boresighted AND before I took it hunting". I couldnt help but laugh at him out loud :snipe: [-o< ](*,)
Your not the only one to pelt someone with brass from your M1. It happens to me frequently. I usually choose my shooting location to avoid hitting others but sometimes you can't. Most people are cool if you warn them. I had one guy get pissed at me after I had asked to trade places on the range due to just this fact. I warned him!

My favorite M1 throws the first 7 rounds forward right about 6 feet, round 8 directly right 10-12 feet. Usually over the head of the person to my right but onto whomever is next to them.

P.S. Occationally my clips bonk me on the top of the head but not often! 8O
Ahhhh wayward brass! I've gotten more than a few dirty looks from the benchrest crowd at the range when shooting off-hand or seated with ARs, M1s or M1As. Seems a little silly that they get offended.

The funniest episode of wayward brass that occurred recently was with my G3 clone. Those things hurl brass 15-20 feet and fairly violently. I had taken the far right position so as not to PO anyone. A guy at the range had pulled up with his brand new truck during my string and decided to make his own parking space directly to the right and slightly behind the firing line. I hadn't noticed him pull up and proceeded through my mag. I guess I pelted the truck with 4-5 empties. If looks could kill...he got back into his truck and ripped out of there with tires squealing.
