Just curious, how many rounds can you fire out of a new Springfield Scout barrel before it needs to be replaced?

When the groups open up. Maybe 5000 rounds. You often cannot tell they open up unless shooting at distance.
Is your barrel chromemoly, chromelined, stainless? Barrel wear can be dependent on how the rifle is shot (many rounds at a time, just a few rounds shot slowly), how it is cleaned and how often, what ammo is used (powders, jacket materials, casings) and how the rifle is stored after shooting.

Also what kind of shooting are you doing and what range? Acceptable CQB or plinking accuracy may be different than that desired by a match shooter.

I remember reading that for every thousand rounds that are shot there is .100 wear at the barrel throat, which most shooters use as a guide for barrel wear. I have, however, seen barrels that had some significant throat erosion that still had very acceptable accuracy.

Most likely your barrel will have acceptable accuracy for years of shooting.
The American Rifleman just had an article about this. No two barrels will wear exactly the same so like hammonje said, when the groups open up to a point you find unacceptable.
assuming a non chrome lined barrel. depending on care, maintenance, abuse you could kill the barrel in less than a thousand rounds. assuming you treat it properly i would expect you to see acceptable accuracy through 5000rnds.
The Scout rifle is not a target rifle so acceptable accuracy could run upwards of 9000 rounds.
Match grade rifles tend to have peak accuracy to about 6000 rounds but will still have reasonable accuracy (not match accuracy) to about 9000 rounds.
Chrome lined barrels will usually shoot well for a good 3000 rounds more.
Acceptable accuracy depends on your needs and expectations.

.308 and .30-06 will give you good barrel life lined or unlined. They're not overbore. You'd shoot out a .243 in half the round count.
I do not disagre with the above posts. I can say that usually for a LEO Sniper rifle in 308 5000 rounds, give or take a few rounds is a good time to replace the barrel.

A German, Austrian, Hammer forged barrel will go 7000 rounds or more...

For "combat" accuracy I would think 7000 to 9000 would be a possibility...

This is assuming corrosion, or bad cleaning techniques were not a factor.

Want to be on the safe side, shoot 5000 rounds and replace...
I have an old M1 Garand with its original unlined barrel the TE is 7+-, ME lets just say it will almost swallow the Bullet
Match accurate she is not. She still exceeds my Expectations and will always hit a Paper plate at 200 & 300 yards with Greek Surplus
It is my Hunting Rifle.
I figure she has had Well Over 5000 pills down her throat
As mentioned before, you will probably get close to 10000 rounds before you start to see the accuracy go south on you.
It was mentioned about mantienance of the barrel. Is this the amount of cleaning?
Avoid corrosive-primer ammo. Clean every time you shoot, if possible. Stroke it out with JB compound once in a while to cut the copper fouling. Heck, toothpaste works, chase with Hoppe's. And keep the chamber shiny clean. That's all.
Will Springfield Armory Inc. replace a worn out barrel as part of the lifetime warranty?
they might, but probably not. look at it this way, if you can afford enough ammo to shoot out a barrel, you can afford a new barrel.
How do I know which ammo has corrosive-primers? I use the American Eagle Brand 7.62x51 ammo (Labeled "For M1A"). Is that corrisive-primer ammo?

Thanks,

J

No it is not Corosive
I can not give any exact manufacture or dates of Corrosive, but mainly old foreign military surplus
If you post that question in the Ammunition section Someone will be more helpful
These days I always think of burning out a barrel in terms of dollars and cents. Unless you "bought them cheap and stacked them deep" you're talking about a few thousand of dollars to wear one out.

Installing a new barrel is cheap compared to wearing one out. GI6

S&B and some KA marked Korean(?) come to mind. Otherwise, 7.62 milsurp from the late '50's forward should be non-corrosive.

-What can you tell us about Stainless Steel barrels?
-Heavy Pattern vs Standard?
-Cut rifled (eg: Krieger's) vs Button rifled?

TIA!
Withy most of my semi auto rifles having chrome lined bores which will probably out live my lifetime i been lubing the receivers and gas systems with moly. I figure the chrome lined bores will outlive the receiver moving parts first. Ok lubing them with moly eliminates all wear and reduces friction. Now on my norc m14 i need to check the headspace often. I figure the headspace may go first before anything else wears out. Maybe if i burnish the moly into the metal in the chanber the headspace may last even longer. I don't let guns wearout before there time when a lube can prevent it.

www.tsmoly.com i use the ts-70 paste or anti seeze moly. Bill

BTW; I shoot the corrosive ammo too as well as modern ammo/primers also. I clean every gun the sameway wether its corrosive ammo or not. Doing it this way i can never make a mistake and woory about if i did it right or not. I sleep very good at night with one less thing to worry about. I just run the wet patches with the orginal G.I. rifle bore cleaner till there clean, sometimes up to 6 wet patches, then two patches to dry it good, then a wet patch with the G.I. light weapons oil and its done. I haven't lost a barrel to corrosive ammo in 40+ years now.

When the imported ammo says non corrosive i don't believe it and why take a chance?
