Hi guys, I've been a member here a while, but haven't posted in a long time. You see, I suffer from crappy M14-itis! In 2011-2012 I bought a new Springfield scout. It shot about 5moa no matter what I did to it. Next was a Polytech. It shot phenomenal, but no scope mount would stay; Sadlak, Bassett, Promag.

So I've got an itch again. I can get a new Springfield standard for a great price. I've also considered building one with USGI parts over the course of a year or so. So my question is, should I go Springfield and roll the dice on it not being a turd, and replace parts until it shoots decent? Or should I spend twice as much on a build?

I know someone will ask, what's my goal? I have a Scar 17 that I find uncomfortable to shoot prone. It's a 1.5-2moa rifle, exactly like FN made it to me. I want to move the M14 build into the scoped dmr type role I'm using the Scar in right now.

Thanks for your opinions.

Greg

a barreled action from LRB, Bula, or JRA would be my choice. Then assemble the usgi parts on to it yourself at home. That would be simple and produce a very fine rifle.

You could also get a SAI loaded model, and send it to one of the trusted M14 match armorers to tune and bed it.

Your budget will be the deciding factor, but their are several ways to get an accurate and reliable M14 type rifle. Take some time, figure out exactly what you want. Then decide the route you want to take to get there. All that is left is saving some money to get that fine rifle. Patients will pay off in the long run. Don't rush and cheap out. You will likely regret it.

If you want to minimize / eliminate the scope mounting issue, go with the LRB M-25. If you build your weapon around an LRB receiver using parts with quality equal to the receiver, you will have a nice weapon. Remember, it's only as strong as it's weakest link. Eliminate any weak links.

That is great advise. Bula defense also makes a receiver with a rail, and theirs id forged into the receiver, not screwed onto it. BUT, the Bula receiver has no rear sight provisions, if that matters to you. A backup sight would be doable too. I like the Bula and the M25 receivers. I am having trouble deciding on which to go with for my DMR type build.

I do like the M25 receiver from LRB, that was my #1 choice, but I had questioned if they were still good after reading some posts here and elsewhere about receivers being out of spec....or was that Smith Enterprise?!? It's hard to tell because people seem to be somewhat coy when they talk about problems with a once reputable company.

I learned the hard way to pay for good stuff and not cut corners, so I'm ok with doing a $2500 build, I'll just have to space it out.

What hytekrednek said in his posts. My LRB is a better rifle that I will ever be fully capable of utilizing. I am also very favorably impressed with the BULA Forge products I have seen. You decide. :)
