He sent me an email. It is marked H&R Semi Auto. It is not US GI so I moved the thread here where maybe somebody else can answer. Possibly it is from an Ohio manufacturer from years ago.

With a serial number that low it would be a T44E4 from Springfield Armory.

This sounds like an H&R Gun Co. model semi-auto M14. H&R Gun Co. M14 rifles were produced by Smith Manufacturing (Toledo, OH) in 1985. This manufacturer is NOT the same as Smith Enterprise, Inc. (Mesa and Tempe, AZ).

I think you saw the one from Montana, the one that has been identified on here as a rewelded receiver. I emailed that guy and it appears all the other parts are Chinese. Be careful, thats a pretty expensive paperweight...
