Brought the Socom16 with me on vacation to Nevada this year, got a chance to run some surplus and some handloads across the chrono. These are averages fired across my Chrony, I'm not going to list deviation because we were having problems with the skyscreens and the sun and I question some of the readings, hence just the average.

Belgian FNB: 2600fps;

Radway: 2630fps;

Prvi 145grn: 2560fps;

My test handloads... LC brass, #34 primer. I tried a few with no crimp and a few with the Lee FCD, I saw no discernable variation in velocity.

43.0grn IMR4895, 147 grn Win FMJ: 2490fps;

36.0grn IMR4064, 167 Nos BTHP: 2080fps avg;

36.0grn IMR4895, 167 Nos BTHP: 2000fps avg;

37.0grn IMR3031, 167 Nos BTHP: 2230fps avg.

The 168grn bullets really showed some promise, accuracy-wise, and load development will continue, including the IMR3031. I was pleased with the 2490fps avg with the 147grn FMJ and IMR4895 out of the 16" barrel, very close to the surplus; I will probably bump it up to 43.5grns and use that as my generic loading for the 147grn bullet.

The Socom functioned flawlessly, even with the slow boat handloads and the last of my steel-cased crap. I recently shimmed the gas lock and torqued the gas plug down with a torque wrench... it did not come loose this time. The more I shoot this thing, the more I like it.

Interesting chrono results. I've always like the Socom's(take you pick of which one). They'll not take the place of the Loaded but they are handy, accurate and they will burn ammo just like all the others.

Charlie98,
Your getting about the same velocities as I am with my Socom 16

PMC Bronze 308B 147gr. FMJBT; 2606fps avg.

Federal XM762D 150gr. FMJBT; 2653fps avg.

Handload...
43.4gr. IMR8208XBR, IVI brass, Winchester 147gr. FMJBT, CCI BR-2 primers; 2607fps avg.

Thank you for the information. Please keep us updated.

The very same bullet I'm using (until I run out... GI4 ) I am interested in IMR8208 as an eventual alternative to IMR4895 with the burn rate in between IMR's 4895 and 3031.

Thanks for adding your factory load data, that reinforces my findings. I had hoped to use FGMM as a benchmark but could not find any in time.

Socom II

Guy's I can not thank you enough that have responded to my question. I have learned a lot and I am checking out the info and getting the ammo needed to make sure that my socom II shoot the right stuff from it. I have also tonight replaced the stock with a sage ebr and a EoTech scope. It is awesome and will be testing the rifle soon.

Again thanks for the info.
