Gas Cylinder Plug

I happened to be looking over the M60 Op manual and noticed the gas cylinder is locked up nice and tight! The 2 ends are secured by what appear to be locking tang washers. Additionally it has 2 safety wires: to hold in the lower plug and to keep the front end plug secured. My question is why wouldn't the M14 have the gas cylinder plug safety wired too? (It could be operator removable by leaving accessable wire ends) Having read about a M14 plug coming out in Ray Hildreths book "Hill 488" it kind of makes me wonder.....

I guess it really wasn't needed. If the plug is torgued to the proper tightness, it shouldn't come off.

The 60 would most likely fire way more ammo then a rifleman with the m-14. Maybe this has somethiung to do with it.

As I'm not familar with the 60, I can't say why it's needed.
Looks like a question for SixTGunr.

Hey Six, you loaded??

With the hot and cold cycles an M60 goes through in firing they can be prone to things falling off or falling apart if not secured. I've had one so hot before my assistant gunner said he could see through the barrel almost. Probably crack induced delusions but ya never know. That barrel was trashed afterwards and got a burriel at sea. It's been a while since I've got to rock and roll on one but things definitly need to be a little more secure on them than an M-14. I got a good laugh when another assistant gunner went to change out my hot barrel another time and his hands stuck to it. He forgot the gloves. 8O
The barrel was so hot it was frozen slightly in it.

Bet he wasn't laughing!!
What is the torque in inch pounds needed to be for the gas plug on the match grade m14's?
I use 15 foot pounds. 11 to 15 is what I hear is the norm.
