I just inherited a Springfield Armory garand receiver. Can this receiver be used to build an M14/M1A type rifle or do I need a genuine M1A receiver. If I can use this for a build, will it need any machining? I want to build a scout type m1A style rifle. 16 inch barrel, scout scope, etc.

A magazine-fed Garand conversion is certainly possible, but not inexpensive. Much machining is necessary, along with the fabrication of parts. If you want an M14 or M1A, start with the approppriate receiver.

Shuffs parkerizing does the build but it is a costly build. Alot of labor involved not to mention you only have a receiver. Its much cheaper to buy a complete Garand than buy parts to assemble one

Sounds like you want an M14 type rifle not an M1.

They are not interchangeable receivers. You can mod to be mag fed, but why mess with it.

If you want an M14 type (M1A) then sell the M1 receiver and use the money to start on a proper M14 clone.

Keep it simple I say.
