I was at AirVenture 2014 at Oshkosh last week, and the USAF Drill Team was there. They were outstanding, and they were using M1 Garands. After the demonstration, I talked to their Master Sgt leader and complimented him on a very well trained group and display. I also talked with one of the team and got to hold his rifle. He said all their drill rifles are completely functional, nothing has been done to them to make them permanently un-fireable. The do have the firing pins out of them, and the rear sights are removed to prevent them from snagging gloves or clothing while being used during performances. They have the bayonet semi-permanently attached, it has straps from the handle of the bayonet fastening it to the barrel in addition to the barrel stud. It makes the bayonet very rigid.

The rifle was noticeably heavier than my M14; the team member said it was a touch over ten pounds with the bayonet.
