Perhaps old news to others, but glancing at the FA web site they are advertising their rifles in subject caliber and for those into extended range shooting that is a heck of a cartridge. Now does the M14 platform do justice to this caliber, don't know, but would be an interesting rifle to have. Did shoot with couple guys in HP matches and they had a SAI/M1A from the factory in 243 Winchester or that is where they claimed it was from. It shot fine from my memory but it is a barrel eater from what I was told?? That 6.5Creedmore is the cats meow for ranges out to and including the 1000yd. line. If I were some 50 years or so younger would sell off some other goodies and "get me some of that..."

I remember Mr. Wolfe, who makes those barrels that the experts on here seem to swear by, saying that it was far easier to make a 1 moa m14 in 6.5 creedmore in part because the smaller diameter left more barrel in the barrel, and as such, less barrel whip, so I'd guess that if you're willing to pay for the cartridge, and want to maximize accuracy shooting an M14, it is likely a safe bet.

I would venture a hazard and guess that it's still not going to match up with a precision bolt gun, but I'd also guess that's not your expectation either, being one of those guys in the know....GI1

You are right I would not expect the M14 in just about any caliber to be the equal of a quality bolt gun in the accuracy department due to the sheer design, nature of the M14. Lots of moving parts when shooting, like a helicopter, being a loose collection of parts all trying to go in the same direction, shake rattle and roll. If I were younger, no chance of that, and just starting out for long range shooting I would go with the 6.5 Creedmore, bolt rifle, even though the 308 has been very good to me over the years, but it has it's limitations. I certainly can't claim that I have reached the level of limits with the 308 for I would have to live another lifetime.

Good question, but I can't answer that but will say at local club XC matches doubt they care what caliber you use, it's for members to hone their skills or introduce new shooters to the sport. NRA, CMP matches, probably not permitted, but just don't know??

Not sure if a 6 or 6.5 in an M14 action is going to be competitive against the bolt guns in a bullseye style match, but it might be able to make a showing in more tactically oriented matches, which are scored differently. I read here that J Wolfe is sponsoring 6mm M1A shooters in the PRS series.

The 6.5 Creedmoore is an excellent cartridge, however the M14 is very hard on brass and 6.5 brass is expensive. The .308 is much easier on the pocket book. I broke down and bought a nice 6.5 Rugar PR to satisfy my curiosity. Saved a lot of money on the gun and the brass will last a whole lot longer.
