Flash Hider

How hard is it to remove a flash hider on a M1A?

I have heard it is a pain in the arse.

Bending castle nut pilers and destroying the castle nut is all I have heard about this process.

I ask because if I get a M1A soon its not going to be Finestine compliant :D

If the castlenut is really on tight, squirt some Kano Kroil Oil or Liquid Wrench on it and let it sit for a few minutes. Then use a small brass punch and a mallet or hammer to loosen it. Be sure to remove the set screw in front of the sight first. Also, if you use a steel punch, it will bugger-up the castle nut!
Most of the bent castle nut plier stories come from folks that bought cheap repros. If its stuck on really tight, in addition to the Liquid Wrench, a little application of heat will also help. I didn't have a propane torch at the time, so I just held it a couple of inches over a red hot electric burner on my stovetop for a few seconds. Worked like a charm.
Castle Nut

Don't forget to remove the set screw first. I imagine that removing the castle nut without removing the set screw first could result in breaking the pliers. It takes a 1/16 allen wrench. If you need to clean up the threads afterward, they are a 6-40 size.

I put together a description of how I did it on Battlerifles, before the move to Amback.
HERE's a Link, or I can re-post it here if anyone would like...
It's not a problem at all. Just buy real castle nut pliers and a 1/16" allen wrench.

Would make a great addition to the forum if you would post it here. I'm sure Duckbuck will be a moving it or copying it over to the intel section for future reference
thanks fer the info guys. But I was wonderin does the gun come with tools like fash hider pliers and gas cylinder wrench? If it comes with tools are they junk or should I buy GI tools from the dreaded EBAY 8O

I appericate the help becuase when I shell out 1400 dollars for this thing its nice to know Im not alone if I need help.
Another thing most people wont tell you, is that the castle nuts are only about $5, so if you should decide to masacre it with a pair of pliers, it's no big loss. I have removed two from guns assembled in the 60's and they were very hard to remove, and in both cases, the castle nut was damaged.
Hi Super Six

I just, as in last night, replaced the flash Sup on my polly-tech. It was very easy.

The M14 dose not come with the tools, you'll need to pick them up from Brownells or Fulton Armoury.
