It has been many years since I looked at my firearms insurance, so felt it was a good time to update everything. I have State Farm for my home/car, and was quoted $430 a year for $35000 coverage on the guns. Does this seem reasonable? Looking for recommendations from fellow forum members. Please feel free to move this if I posted in wrong section of forum.

We discussed this a while back........ This topic is like opening a can of worms. There seemed to be no real consensus on insuring firearms. Some insurance companies require the serial number and appraised value of each weapon. Some say it's a "fixed amount" of coverage. Mine has a dollar figure on the contents of my safe but do not require the serial numbers. I photo document the contents of my safe frequently.

I'm always open to learn more about how other's have their valuables covered.

Thanks,

Hobo

I really need to do this too. Maybe even set up a trust at the same time. Is there an insurance company you guys would recommend over another? No way will it be Progressive.

I also have State Farm Personal Article policy which covers guns, jewelry, antiques, collectables and camera gear at about the same value you have.-----your quote sounds reasonable to me. I am paying about $30 a month for mine, but I also include that with my auto insurance premiums so the multi-policy discount drops the price a little.

A word of advice, after you send your insurance the inventory and values, Make sure you have your insurance send you a list of what they actually have on file in their system. I notice the price of my insurance went up after deleting some items off of my policy----after inquiry, I discovered that the insurance company had many of the same items double and triple listed while not having some of my new additions on the policy----So, my advice is work with your local insurance agent to make sure you have a good method of adding and deleting items from the policy.

I am a 30 Year State Farm customer and have nothing but good things to say about them---all of my auto claims have been fair and painless and..... I even had a $1000 Camera lens roll off my countertop onto a ceramic tile floor---and, well that made the lens all jingly on the inside. I called and got an email quote from Canon, sent that to My State Farm agent and had a check for the full amount of the repair two days later. Hard to beat that for service and peace of mind.

I've always kept a detailed listing on each gun, pictures, serial numbers, etc. Don't need an appraisal, but would require a detailed schedule be given to State Farm with serial numbers this time around. That's why I thought I would check to see who you use. Placed a few calls yesterday to various companies to get estimates, seems like they will only offer a separate policy if I switch home/auto to them as well. Not going that route.

Use Collectables Insurance Agency out of Pa. $50K coverage for about $300 per year. You give them the gun description and amount for each gun, and you keep the serial number. They were the best/most reputable I found.

I saw them online, but couldn't find anyone who ever had to file a claim with them. Just wondered how they would be to deal with come claim time.

Try www.historicfirearms.com, it is Eastern Firearms Insurance which is a subsidiary of Chubb Insurance. Their rates are good and you do not have to supply serial numbers to them. They give you different ceiling amounts per set dollar figures.

I have had them for 2 years and I am paying $138.00 for $25,000.00 coverage. I luckily have not had a claim yet. They just want to know a total number of firearms you want insured, not the specific kinds. They ask what you think the dollar amount is and it is up to you to provide proof of ownership of the guns lost should you have a claim.
