(CNN) — Two F-16 fighter jets collided over Georgia Tuesday night, according to the South Carolina Air National Guard.

The pilots were both able to eject safely after the crash, the Guard said in a statement.

They were performing "routine night-flying operations."

Seems that, recently, planes are being taken out faster than they are being replaced.

Who's making notes?

I don't ever recall losing as many military aircraft as we have lately.

I was thinking the same thing a few months ago. That is why I started noting them here.

I'm sure some of our member's are experienced with planes and can give an explanation. Seems to me the two major causes of plane crashes have been either pilot error or mechanical failure.

If an old retired welder is taking notes..... surely the enemies of the United States are, also, taking notes.

Don't be too concerned, only my beloved Corps is really hurting. The Navy has a plethora of new 4th Gen Super Hornets and the Air Force has a ton of legacy F16 and F15.

Crashes happen, I remember in the late 90's, the entire F-16 fleet was grounded for a day due to engine nozzles on P&W engines coming apart inflight causing crashes. Old worn out planes are going to have more maintenance issues, and human error is always a concern. And sometime things just line up so we have a bad couple of weeks, it doesn't necessarily mean the aircraft or military is fundamentally flawed.

The Fighter accident rate has slowly improved over the years, and the size of our Fighter forces has been cut significantly, because of this the number of accidents is actually less than 25 years ago before the start of the big cutback. What is different now is 24/7 media coverage where a gear up landing in a light twin often makes national news. Stand downs periodically happen when there is a rash of accidents to try to identify and correct the causes. Having said that less flying time for Pilots result in less proficiency, worn out jets on constant deployment cant be good either, both conditions which I think exist now.

Folks I can tell you why...Flight training cut in half. The F22 squad in VA has had their time cut in half along with the rest of the military. Its NEVER been this bad in my 61 years exchanging O2 for CO2..... simple fact, simulators and cartoons are not real life...thats why airlines fly off 50+ hours in the 300 series Airbus simulator although "Officially" they can step right in a real AC after passing....That is US air carriers. Its all fun and games till someone starts shooting.

When dad was stationed at Little Rock AFB they lost two C130's from there in one year.

When he was stationed at Minot AFB they lost two B52's and shortly after that a KC135. At least two of them (one B52 and the KC135) crashed on take off. That was in a period of a few weeks. The two BUFFs went down (I think one survivor from the two planes and he was badly burned) and the KC135 was the plane flying out the IGs people after the investigation into the two B52 crashes had been completed.

Now that would make you feel funny. The people investigating the two earlier crashes getting killed in a crash taking off from the base were the two crashes they were investigating happened.
