Has anyone ever thought about engraving for there M14 or M1a? I have yet to see anyone do it here but I thought about doing it. I saw a poster here made an aluminum hand guard here and my first thoughts where "hmm.... that would look awesome with some good engraving." I just wanted to know your guys thoughts and ideas of any engravings you might think would be nice or intresting to see.

Scroll work looks great on just about any firearm, but the M14 doesn't have much permanent canvas to work with. Just the top and left side of the receiver (if you aren't using a scope mount). Possibly the sides of the heel. You certainly wouldn't pay to engrave a part that can wear out, like the oprod or barrel.

I completely agree but with as many m14 and m1a we all have you would think someone would come up with an awesome design even taking the beautiful wood stocks and etching them I mean yea I get the whole to pretty to shoot thing but god could you imagine the beauty a tiger strip birch stock etched with aluminum handguard etched with the flash suppressor reading smile wait for flash. Sound pretty nice to me. But that's just my opinion.

Anyone who says the M14 isn't a beautiful piece of equipment probably wouldn't like a '57 Chevy two-door hardtop either-go figure.
The M14 IS a beautiful piece of equipment.....as is. Not so much with scribbling all over it....GI2
Like a metal flake chameleon paint job....on a tank..... Gag me with a backhoe.

My milsurps are "working" rifles, not presentation grade, "pidgeon grade", display, or "safe queen" firearms. I can appreciate fine metalwork like engine turning, scroll engraving, and gold and silver plating on certain rifles and shotguns. I'm a "blue collar" type guy and but for my old '60's Borfors steel-barreled SAKO Deluxe Finnbear which has a wood inlay and some game animal likeness etched on the floorplate, I don't have anything fancy. I don't go in for costly aesthetic "improvements" that do nothing to add to the durability or accuracy of a firearm. I do hate over-buffed chrome-plated M1911's with gold plated hammers and triggers - just the way my taste in firearms goes. Those .45's are too cheap and "South of the Border" looking for me.

And IIRC, two of the main attractions of the '55 back then were its relative light weight and the "small block" Chevy V-8 engine. Can't recall many folks buying them for their looks; the '55's body was just the package that the goodies came in.

Only embellishment I thought about on my LRB M14SA would be to see if Doug Turnbull Restorations could/would color case harden the various metal parts of the rifle. I have had some other rifles had the treatment and definitely adds a touch of class, but at no small price. Truth of the matter I would think it would really look go on the recently acquired M1 Garand Special Grade/308, kind of like adding "class on class." I will check with Turnbull folks and see if it is an option, just dreaming at this time. If you are not familiar with his work, check out Turnbull Restorations, definitely gun art.

Each to their own. I like a nice wood stock with character (which I have fortunately) to make it stand out above the dull looking straight grain stocks.
