Enfield No4 Mk1* Long Branch

Here is one of my recent C&R purchases, an Enfield No4 Mk1* Long Branch. I like these Enfields! Anybody out there collect these?

Your collection of C&R rifles are outstanding and evidently you have taken some time and care in getting these rifles to look the way they do! That is really job well done, Sir!!!

I know little about the Enfield or the '03 rifles... maybe if you could do a short intro on these rifles, I would really appreciate it...

Sure wish my Enfields looked as nice as yours.

And out of curiosity can I ask what part of Hawaii? Went to high school at Waimea High on Kauai a long time ago.

You know your Enfields - that's exactly what they are. My other two haven't gotten around to taking pictures of (my LongBranch is sporterized - but it's also my very first rifle).

Love the .303's!

For some reason I want to say .303 but those are the Brit Enfields ... Right? :?

All the rifles here on this thread shoot British .303 Six. They are Efields. The gentleman who posted his LongBranch has a beautiful Canadian example of the British rifle - they are great shooters. If I recall right the P14 (American Enfield) also shoots .303.

03's and 03A3's shoot 30-06 (along with the P17 - American version of the British .303).

Fun rifles all (and I'm still on the hunt for a P17 which I will find eventually).

Thank you Hawk for pointing that out - I'm not used to boards where you can post as a Guest - so that's been fixed.

Six - thanks for shrinking the pics for me - I'm still learning. Not sure about putting my name on them - but I like what you did. Do you give lessons as well?

I kinda thought they wuz .303 but was not sure. I really don't know all that much about the .303 round as well and I will go to the "ammo" forum for this next question ....

My favorite uncle shoot more deer with his old 303 than I'll ever see in a lifetime. He was'nt a collector, just a darn good woodsman & hunter on a budget. He filled his deer tag as well as his Mother's,wife's & 2 daughters' tags every year. In North Maine, you fill your deer tag & pick potatos or starve in the winter. Maybe they have more work up there now than 20 years ago, but filling your tag is still top priority.

The .303 can do what a .30-06 and .308 will. Nice round for hunting (deer or Heinkels) and the action on the 4 Mk1 is about as smooth and fast on any bolt rifle you'll find.

a couple months ago a friend gave me a sporterized enfield. dont know anything about them so i did a little checking, seems its a savage made rifle and marked U.S.Property. picked up some surplus .303 from a shooting buddy but havent fired a round though it. most of the rifle is there, but it looks like someone cut the front of the stock and just rounded it to the barrel.the barrel looks to be uncut as the front sight looks orignial. the butt of the stock hasnt been altered either.
caliber isnt marked so i assume its .303, if its been rechambered, like for .308, it would be marked ? correct?
i,de like to shoot it, just for grins, but if i dont thats cool.

It's probably .303 but I'd check and verify for sure shotgun.

Lots of guns that got sporterized are not the caliber they started out with. However, from the sounds of it most likely it will be .303 (but I'd still check and verify to be sure).

Conversions of No.4 rifles to .308 are relatively rare. The conversion required a new barrel, bolt head, and magazine. All of these parts are somewhat difficult, but not impossible, to come by. It is doubtful that someone would have gone to this extent on a "home brew" sporter like the one that you have.
Still it would be a good idea to have the rifle checked over by a gunsmith before firing it.

Wish I knew how to post pictures,but I guess I will just tell you about my old girls.my first one is a 1917 B.S.A. no.I mk.III my scond was originally a B.S.A. but was FTR'ed by the indian's so it is now a ishy 1945 no.I mk.III. And last but not least is my pride and joy a 1950 longbranch no.4 mk1* 5 grove with all numbers matching and the broad arrow C that was used as a competition shooter so it has the rare C inside of an oval and 5g in a square 8)
